csa
Went for a "spirited drive" and suddently the car changed "sound" after a run through the gears. when reving slightly it's clear to hear a knocking sound. it's deffenately from the engine...so end of season for me. Question now is what to buy when overhauling the engine...any suggestions?
JamieP
Blimey, cant believe that has let go:blink: did you get it remapped when you changed to the T67? Best of luck with it.
csa
didn't get it remapped yet, but was only running 1 bar, and EGT's and AFR's were all dandy
JamieP
I see, im no mapper but with different turbos coming online at different times id expect the map to be well off, hopefully its not a piston and its a spun shell, you can simply get a set of drop in pistons and rods for it, no need for a rebore. Cant have done more than a few thousand miles that engine, i brought it new from inchscape toyota.

j80leo
New engine from Toyota £7600 cylinder head and block nothing more than that so you think it would come with something
JamieP
New engine from Toyota £7600 cylinder head and block nothing more than that so you think it would come with something I paid about £1800 for the complete block, putting it on a 600bhp car and not being fitted by toyota would void all warranty's. csa
another thing: I presume that my main bearings has gone pop, do I need to replace the crank shaft or is it possible to refurb / reuse it?

Homer
didn't get it remapped yet, but was only running 1 bar, and EGT's and AFR's were all dandy What were you thinking? And no, I'm not taking the p*ss, were you simply not aware what would happen?
JamieP
To be fair if it has simply spun a shell then mapping would not have effected that. Not saying what he done was right.
Homer
To be fair if it has simply spun a shell then mapping would not have effected that. Not saying what he done was right. Cause ain't know yet, but a new engine like that shouldn't have a shell drop out. What I'm saying is that the car was driven essentially unmapped and as you'd expect something has let go. Unless the bottom end/oil system wasn't built correctly or there was a pump failure it shouldn't have a bearing or shell issue. My money is on it being det related (piston, etc)
Lee P
Sounds like its spun a shell, I would say new crank, new rod (on the one that spun), new bearings and you should be ok. But you will find out when its apart. If it is det related then you may need a piston as well.

With egt's and afr's on the money, and low boost, honestly no, I wasn't aware Edited September 4, 2008 by csa (see edit history)
Ian C
An eyeball on the AFR gauge now and again for 0.3 of a second does not equal "the AFRs are dandy" I'm afraid. If you've put on a 'bigger' turbo you'll supply denser air at the same pressure so it'll go lean. If you've put on a 'smaller' turbo it can spin up faster especially in higher gears and maybe hit a load site the original map never needed. Guest Nicholas
I feel for the car under your ownership please please please do your homework before changing turbos and heading straight out for a drive in future.
Chris Wilson
Det will hammer out the shell on a big end in seconds, even on a perfect bottom end. This sort of thing is plain inevitable, engines shouldn't even be started until on a dyno, let alone driven with spirit after major mods. The engine and cooler will be full of shrapnel, the rod(s) oval, the crank almost certainly shot for further use in a modded engine. Could be bore damage... Milton79
wasnt jamie's engine built by turbo fit?
JamieP
wasnt jamie's engine built by turbo fit? The turbofit built one spun a shell after 5000miles, looks like the toyota one has lasted about the same.
