MrRalphMan
Is anyone using an XBOX (Original) with XBMC as a media center How easy was it to get it up and running? How easy was it to mod it and install a larger HD? Looks like an interesting project, would make playing my 'backups' a little easier. Cheers. Paul. MrRalphMan
Shameless bump.... Wow, looks like for ~£50 quid from Ebay you get everything to softmod and setup xbmc to allow streaming of movies to your telly. Looks like the Xbox (Classic) can also send a HD picture.. Sounds great

MrRalphMan
Example - here Also here You just need to go into the dashboard and let it know what options you can send.. It them chooses that optimal (Not so sure myself) picture type to display. I assume that the xbmc replacement dashboard has the same options. That's not outputting in HD though, that's just a cable to connect it via component to a HDTV. Still only standard def.
MrRalphMan
Sorry, maybe a bit misleading.. Not playing HD content, but upscales the picture to HD 1080i.
supra_aero
hmmm, I am interested in this. We need more posters of people who have done these mods!

Wow, looks like for ~£50 quid from Ebay you get everything to softmod and setup xbmc to allow streaming of movies to your telly. Looks like the Xbox (Classic) can also send a HD picture.. Sounds great Don't need to spend £50... I've got a 98p copy of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, plus something called SID (which is an easy softmode installer). simply install XBMC then. It isn't a difficult operation. I've done 10 xboxs so far. Got 5 around the house as media players using an SMB connection to my NAS. They play AVI's just fine. Wouldn't bother with HD though as the processor really isn't up for the job. All you really need is an old controller which you cut the cable and attach a normal usb connector to. Then use a small 32mb usb stick to upload the mod. To upload apps, it is simply a case of FTP'ing the programs up to the xbox.
imi
any good websites that go through the procedure step by step. Also - the HDD that the XBOX classic supports / are they SATA or EIDE?
JustGav
any good websites that go through the procedure step by step. Also - the HDD that the XBOX classic supports / are they SATA or EIDE? No idea on website... The HDD's are EIDE, you can't upgrade the HDD easily with a softmod, because the xbox locks the drive. There are ways around it, but really not worth the ago. Hence the reason for using a NAS/SAN on the other side.
MrRalphMan
Almost decided on this, would someone be able to put SID on a Memory Unit for me?
cheekymonkey
I also use an Xbox as my primary media centre. Chipped it myself and upgraded the hdd to 120GB, however the way I use it now the HDD is not needed. I stream all off a samba share as well. My next project may be to try and get the damn thing to run more quietly though
MrRalphMan
I have a classic Xbox that needs converting using SoftMod; anyone local that can help do this for me? Once I get a console and the bits, after a bit of practise on mine, I'd be quite happy to give this a go. [repost]Anyone able to copy the SID to a MU for me?[/repost] The easiest way to do it, is to get a mem stick and get someone to format it on their modded xbox (formats it fatx) and copy sid to it (*hint*, I've got 4 that have SID on it). (There is a way to do it with Datel Action Replay which you can find on the net). I originally got SID from piratebay.

Sorry didn't read this thread all the way through fully.. £50 was for everything, including the Xbox, DVD Remote, Splinter Cell and prob the Action Replay to get SID onto the MU. Would be nice if I could get the MU populated another way, not sure how though... Been reading up and installing the dash's seems pretty simple, FTP and overwrite the old version.. Cheers, Paul.
