markybhoy86
I've just had HKS cams fitted to my 93 3.0 TT j-spec supra. When i accelerate up to high revs the car starts to misfire between 4 and 5k rpm and it stops pulling as hard. this happens in 3-6th gear, this never happened before the cams where fitted. any ideas whats wrong? Scott
What lift cams? Shouldn't have bothered unless you plan on going single.
markybhoy86
they are 256 and 264 cant remember what ones intake and exhaust
Scott
Who recommended them for an almost stock sup? Colder grade plugs might be an option if you have the boost turned up or anything.
markybhoy86
i wanted them done at the same time as when i was getting the belt etc done, there in now so that doesnt matter- what matters is its misfiring and im needing somethings to check to solve it? the boost is running about 1.0bar
Scott
Might be the contacts on the coil pack clips. I'm guessing they would have been taken off to get in about the cam's. If you fancy a full set whifbitz sell them for a good price. Does the missfire go away after 5k?
markybhoy86
the coilpack clips where fine when we took them off, its getting looked at over the weekend to see if we've missed anything. the missfire starts at 3-4k and does it slightly at 5-6k, when this happens the car doesnt pull as much as it should

Tourniquet
My single has just started doing it. Only notices on boost when Im giving it some welly and sometimes sounds bad and run likes shite on start up. According to Michel Lane who built her for me it's just a dead spart plug. Im going to replace them in the next day or two and see if that helps. Grade 7 gapped to 0.7 I think it is and I should be fine again. And by the way, my boost symtoms are like a popping sound as it flies off and a slight sort of hesitation as it pulls - it does pull none the less but not quite as smooth as I remember
markybhoy86
let me know how u get on with the spark plugs, seems to be a common one ppl are saying
Paul Whiffin
Start with the coil pack clips, check they are all ok. If they are then next is plugs, if they are ok then coil packs, thats as long as its an ignition misfire of course. Try that lot first and go from there. That's exactly the way I went about it when I had my misfire but it kept misfiring after replacing all of those parts. I decided to remove the crank/camshaft speed sensors, visually they looked okay. Checked the resistance, I'm not sure if this alone can diagnose them as being faulty though. Refitted these speed sensors and now the car runs perfectly with no misfires at all. markybhoy86
cheers, getting it checked at the weekend so i'll let you know how i get on
Tourniquet
Did my spark plugs today and unfortunately still does the same thing. Was advised to check the coil packs so while the engine was running I undid each clip one at a time to see what it would do. The front pack stalled the car with each clip but the middle and rear packs had the car running still so hopefully it's that. I've got to check my ignitor pack too when I find someone that can help me out too.
markybhoy86
just so the post isnt left without an answer, the car was stripped down again at the weekend, connectors, coil pack etc was all checked and fine, the car was then shimmed (supposidly it was pain in the arse) was then put back together and since then its running great. No misfiring at all anymore =) love it again lol

Make sure your plugs are also gapped around .028" That is what most of my friends who run cams/ single turbos run.
mrdsukautos
All shims were in spec on this car though 5 were at bare minimum specification so im still at a loss as to what was wrong . I suppose ill have to just presume one of the coil pack connectors perhaps wasnt getting a good contact for some reason
Ric
fitting cams to a stock supra, wouldn't that put the timing out or require some adjustment of fuel and timing? ie a addon ECU and mapping would be required?
Guest rjchavez
I installed Crower 272's on my stocker and replaced the fuel pump and performed the 12v mod. Did require a AFC NEO for tuning purposes though.
