Konrad
Good luck Babe I did quit smoking over a year ago after 15 years of 25-30/day. Wasn't really challenge, as i did treat this as a curiosity test of how long I can stay without cigarette. I always had tobacco/filters/papers in my backpack to keep assured, that IF I will get desperate, there is help for it. Package is still in my backpack, tobacco is prolly completely dry till now but hey, I did it After 2 weeks I stopped thinking about smoking completely, started to enjoy improved taste and easier breathing I think it was easier for me, because at last stage before quitting smoking (around 1.5 year) I did smoke rollups, not ready made cigarettes. Rollups are usually containing less tobacco and effectively I was smoking half of what I had before. I did also smoke dark tobacco, which is slightly stronger than usuall mixed one, so limited my habit even more. Konrad
Babe
I smoked roll-ups too, so only spend about £6 a week on smoking - isn't going to make a great deal of financial difference! Picked a bad time to stop really; if I'd stopped at the beginning of the holidays I probably could have gone cold turkey, but I was moving house then so not a good time. Right now I've got Sprog's ear-holes to think of, and 32 little darlings when I go back to school - not fair on them to put up with my foul mood so I need the patches now, for my sanity and their well-being. Been to doctors this morning - got 21mg patches, plus lozenges if I need them. Sure it is all psychological. I've got an unopened packet of tobacco hidden away (as a 'comfort blanket' I guess). It's like chocolate I suppose - if I have a fridge full I never eat the stuff, but if there's none around I want it (like at JAE)! Thanks for all your advice guys/gals... keep it coming! I'm sure by 6pm I'll be ready to murder whoever's nearest (poor Sprog).
AlanM
Keep going Babe, you can do it. It does get a lot easier, believe me
Mike
It's never a good time to stop.... sadly you just have to do it! For me (after building up to 20 a day in my mid twenties) it was three days of hell... and then I just took the whole thing day by day... It might sound a bit strange but I bought an electronic poker game and when I felt like a needed to kill someone or go for a fag, I buried my head in the game and had a few hands of poker.. give it a few minutes and the feelings pass. Also stay out of pubs for a while and (I found) avoid coffee... just because coffee and cigarettes were my particular downfall.
Babe
Still off em! Got the 21mg patch on today, working much better. My worst place is the car, always want one when I'm in there, but not touched one once! Anyone that's given up (I gave before a long time ago so I can't remember)... am I gonna get a cough? Got this annoying tickle at the moment, just wondering if it's gonna get worse and whether I should get some Benylin in lol.
couv3z
i had a cough, brougth some interesting stuff, but it will pass and least its not in you anymore (smoke free for 14 weeks now )

Pot
The tickle in your throat's the hairs growing back... It's a right PITS, but nothing you can do about it... The worst thing for me is the period of dizzyness, and lightheadedness that you get... That's down to your body adjusting to the extra oxygen in your blood, it affects each person differently... Personally, it messes me up big time, and is my main reason for failing to give up... I meant to give up on Monday, but failed (Again) straight away... I can't handle a weekend without smoking, or having a tipple, so I've chosen the 8th as my giveup day, and I'm even going to attend the 'support groups' that I've asked for (I spent an hour on the phone to the NHS last night) Fair play to those (inc Babe ) who're working on the suppliments, I've tried them, and they didn't work - Did it on Willpower once, for 18 months, but I was surrounded by non-smoking mates at the time, which was a great help... Nowadays I come home from work, and I'm stuck in the same flat I smoke in, miles away from anywhere good... Anyhow, thumbs up

Patches are working for me; have wanted fags but have enough will-power not to succumb. Unfortunately I didn't really have the option of going cold-turkey - stopped the day after JAE, and back to school on the Wednesday - I'm really rather unpleasant without my nicotine fix! Just got to ween myself off the patches now, but at least I've stopped - lesser of the two evils, and I know I won't smoke again (promised Sprog). DJButler
I was smoking 50 Marlboro a day and gave up just like that, in the ambulance on my way to intensive care. That was in 1994 but belive me i have not fancied a smoke since. Good luck to all who manage to kick the habit before they get as big a shock as i did!. I made up my mind to save the money i was spending on the weed and spend it on all those other little things i wanted but could not justify spending money on before, laptop, mp3 player, dvd player for the Supe and suchlike all financed from giving up. Helps with fuel costs as well:)
AlanM
I hope you are still off Babe. I am just hitting on 6 months, have had a few "odd" things, coughs, breathlessness etc but fine now, still get the odd pang or two but not bad at all
Babe
Yep, still off them. Fortunately (or maybe not), I got the cold from hell two weeks after I stopped and I was so rough I didn't even use the patches so had a bit of enforced 'cold turkey'. Still get the craving, and the incredible bad moods that come with them, but I promised Sprog I'd stop and I have. Best tip for me was this (and I still do it)... When people smoke, more than half of what they breathe is fresh air - pulled through the cigarette right down into the lungs. People don't normally breathe as deeply as they do when they are smoking, so each deep breath actually changes how you feel by puting more oxygen into your bloodstream. This means you can use deep breaths to change the way you feel instantly and begin to take control of your cravings. So if I'm gagging for a fag, I take three really deep breaths (like I'm sucking through a straw), and it works! Craving gone!
