tbourner
Can anyone recommend a GPS system that has colour mapping, can be used in the car with directions, and also small and portable and can be taken out and used on walks and maybe on my bike as well? Ideally I wanted one that showed speed and stuff as well, but I don't know anything about GPS systems, do they show your location and altitude and stuff? Can you zoom into the map? Any info appreciated.
Jake
Nokia N95 ? It's what I use.
DaveK
I'd agree a phone is the obvious choice. I had N95. Now got 6110 or something (the Navigator one). Both do the job - far more convenient than the old PDA thing I used to use.
tbourner
Can't you get like a Garmin or something that is portable? I've already got a phone, I use it for phoning people, I don't want the battery to run out cos I've been using it as a sat nav.
dangerous brain
Dude come on into the latest century. I have the PDA based orange M700 which is a HTC 3600. HTC have some new items on the market that are thinner, lighter and slicker than the one I have. With Tom Tom I have used mine as a handheld and car based unit with mostly success. If I wanted a more ordnance survey system then I would have to do some shopping.
carl0s
I remember using my N95 to try to get back to my car at Santa Pod's Flame & Thunder bonfire night special. It didn't work. What a nightmare. I think I might have been using TomTom on it though, not sure, but basically it was no good at just telling me which way to walk. Told me there was no route to where I wanted to get ! That'll be because you were trying to navigate by road (when there wasn't one). If you had gone to Advance Planning (in TomTom) and then selected "Walking Route" it would have worked. We used exactly this same thing to find our way back to our car in Spain a couple of weeks ago.

I've got Garmin Mobile XT and TomTom on my N95 (as well as the Nokia GPS thing which I can't get on with) Doesn't cost much to charge a phone battery you know. carl0s
I figured the Nokia software might have been the answer, but I'd never have thought TomTom did walking routes. Thanks guys
tbourner
OK look, I've just changed my phone, I'm not going looking for another phone that I don't really want JUST because it's got sat nav on it - I like my phone, I want to keep it just the way it is, I don't want a HUGE N95/96 shaped brick in my pocket all day for the sake of the odd weekend when I need GPS!!!!! If you're suggesting I buy an N95 as an addition to my current phone, and use it purely for GPS stuff, I'm sure there are better options out there specifically for the task, rather than spending £300 on a string and cup that happens to have a map tied to it!!! So, anyone who isn't obsessed with mobiles making their tea, any suggestions?
michael
....any suggestions? Yeah, go somewhere else for advice tetchy pants!!!!!! (note extra exclamation marks for full effect) Or you can chill out, ignore the good advice given and calmly explain why you want to carry 2 bulky devices around for those times when you go wandering and need GPS and a phone. At that point I'd probably suggest a Road Angel Adventurer 7000 or a Satmap. http://www.roadangel.co.uk/products/adventurer7000 http://www.satmap.com And breathe... merckx
Tom Tom's are very good value for money and fairly compact too. http://www.satnav-discounts.co.uk/tomtom-go/tomtom-go-gb-series.htm If you click on "Earlier models" they're the cheapest of all. tbourner
Yeah, go somewhere else for advice tetchy pants!!!!!! (note extra exclamation marks for full effect) I'm not going to AV forums, they're worse than you lot with knowing what's best for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Or you can chill out, ignore the good advice given and calmly explain why you want to carry 2 bulky devices around for those times when you go wandering and need GPS and a phone. At that point I'd probably suggest a Road Angel Adventurer 7000 or a Satmap. http://www.roadangel.co.uk/products/adventurer7000 http://www.satmap.com And breathe... Ooh, they're good! Mainly because, like I said, I won't be using it often enough to warrant having it built into my phone, I like my phone and don't want to change it, I don't think it's worth it for the gains on 'those' weekends. I won't be too bothered about having 2 items on me on those weekends either, cos my phones is pretty small and inconsequential, and I'll have plenty of pockets for poo bags and drinks and stuff anyway! Thanks for the links you helpful so and so.
Supragal
I've got a Tom Tom Go. Awesome. I don't know how long the battery lasts as I only really use it in the car. Fully recommend it however, although you may consider it to be too bulky to carry about, won't fit in a pocket for example.
ivan
You could probably pick up a GPS enabled PDA pretty cheaply on fleabay and put TomTom on it. I had one of these until I built my carpc: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Mio-168-Digiwalker-PDA-and-Satellite-Navigation-System_W0QQitemZ270269663085QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item270269663085&_trkparms=72%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
michael
Maybe I'm going OTT but with him saying he wanted to use it for walks and on his bike etc I've gone for the ones that are waterproof and have OS mapping included.
tbourner
Yep, needs to be rugged and waterproof and have Ordnance Survey maps. Only bad comment I've heard about the Satmap is the battery life, but it takes AA so that's not too bad.
