This hair-on-the-neck-stiffening projectile is Audi Sport’s 500bhp-plus GT3 race version of the Audi R8, which will be available from autumn 2009.

"Ever since the R8 was unveiled we’ve been inundated with enquiries about a race version. With the Audi R8 we will offer customers a racing sportscar equipped with high-calibre technology and the typical Audi qualities, but which is nevertheless easy to handle," explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr Wolfgang Ullrich.

Because GT3 regs prohibit the use of four-wheel drive the Audi R8 comes with the typical GT rear-wheel drive. Power is transmitted via a newly developed six-speed sequential sports gearbox. A modified front end and a large rear-wing generate the required downforce for the race track and a comprehensive list of safety equipment guarantees the highest-level of passive safety.

It's just not agressive enough to be a racer and with the extras it's not pretty enough to be an R8.

And it's not pink, it needs to be pink.

I don't think the standard R8 looks "pretty".

Not enjoying the Roadster :|

It makes a nice car look very gay indeed...

Michael, you are officially 'wrong' on this one I'm afraid.

(unless it was ironey, and then 'lol' etc.)

I agree with the above sentiments. Admit your mistake and move on Michael.

Sorry, I won't be moved on this one, the R8 is a pretty car, it's not some evil purposeful design that's main intention is to suck air and spit it out again, it's pretty, it's fast with it but it's easy on the eye because, dare I say it, it's Audi bland with a spinkle of Lambo fun... which is then smoothed out a bit.

I like the R8 a lot, I just don't think the GT3 goes far enough to move it away from the base car but goes far enough to make it ugly.

Maybe a different set of wheels would help but it's not doing it for me and I love GT3 cars normally. The front view is lovely, as is the rear, it's the 3/4 and side where I'm not having visual delight.

The LF-A roaster works... this one looks better as a coupe. I think it looks a little too similar to a lot of VW/Audi drop tops. Not a bad car of course, just nothing that blows me away in awe.

Edit. opinions changing after seeing it with the top up  (and in that colour)

OMG UR liek so rong just admit it!!!!3.14!!

The R8 convertible looks better than the 350Z convertible effort, but it still looks better as a tin top.

You're wrong.
