Cheap to run 2nd car

My current 2nd car, a Rover Metro, had got a bad case of the metal worm, so I'm looking to replace it with something else.

Budget is around £1000 tops, but the less the better. Looking at autotrader, anything below £500 just seems to be a dog or have mega miles (120,000+) on it.

My criteria are:

- cheap to run and service;

- not too huge mileage (anything up to 100,00 ish or just over should be OK);

- not too prone to rusting (so no more metros, then!);

- fairly small. No bigger than a Focus/Escort I'd say;

- not too old. Anything 1997 onwards I'd say

Not too keen on the Citroen AX: they seem too flimsy.

Any suggestions? - not just specific cars for sale, but recommendations of what models I should look out for.

I recently found a runabout for a friend to buy,

1995, Toyota corolla, 1.3, 60,000 miles, fsh, in good'ish condition, £600

Ive had a lot of experience with these, they are very good cars, cheap to run, reliable and Toyota!

Theres plenty about and way way better than a metro;)

What do you think of a Peugeut 306 1.9 diesel? Any good reliability wise? Any major problems?

I get 500 miles from a ~55l tank ENTIRELY round town almost always running cold, or 800+ miles from largely motorway runs. Had to rewire the door switches but then someone had bodged that previously.

Chaps,

What kind of mpg figures do you get with those cars (escort/corolla)?

Parkers quote 35mpg for the 1.3 petrol.

From my experiences with cars stay away from anything french! Although, i have heard that the older Diesel engines are ok.

I would recommend going with something Jap even if you have to sacrifice some letters on the number plate and go slightly older.

My Nissan Sunny (1995 1.4) is a fantastic little car.

Easy to service yourself, cheap parts from motor factors, I do two services a year at about £25 a time, its on 97,000 miles now without any problems.

No cambelt to worry about either.

44MPG winter, 48MPG in the summer.

If you've been happy in a metro then you'll be fine in a 205 diesel and thats what i'd recommend.

I've had 2 now.............first was £300 non turbo, took that from 160K miles to 170K miles in less than a year......just servicing costs.

Current one is a Turbo £250 (cheap as its front windows wouldn't work - i just swapped the glass from the above car before it was scrapped) and has gone from 102K to 114k with just diy servicing and recently a Power steering belt replacement.

They are not terrible to drive and the turbo has decent pace with a small sacrifice in mpg, must be in the 40's though still........
