hadyn
Hi all, I've recently bought some second hand grooved discs, which are due to be fitted this weekend. Here they are: Can anyone tell me which way round the grooves should go, as the original stickers which tell you which way to mount them have long since gone

hadyn
Getting a local garage to do the job. I dont fancy swapping the discs and changing the brake fluid myself
hadyn
Do these look the right way round to you guys?
hadyn
The grooves are angling to the rear in that pic arent they?
monkey3
As was said in that other thread, the direction of the "pad scrubbers" (grooves) you can see in the picture above is less relevant. The important part is which direction the vents in the middle of the disc go. They should lean back with relation to the main direction of travel (forwards obviously). i.e. they should throw dust and heat out rather than force air in. hadyn
So they're the right way round in the pic above?
monkey3
You can't tell from looking at that picture. There are grooves on the outside of the disc (that you can see in the pictures above) and there are cooling \ ventilation vanes inside the disc (that you cannot see in the picture). It's the ones that you can't see that matter. If you can, take a picture looking down on the disc or up at the disc so you can see it end on. Otherwise, stick a small screwdriver in to the middle of the disc from the top and see which way it naturally slants (should be backwards) See attached images... In the (high quality photoshop computer generated reality) picture... the (red) direction of travel and the (red) direction of the vanes between the 2 faces of the disc matters. The swept back, like yours are (in blue) and swept forward (in pink) I've seen in both directions. hadyn
So what happens if the grooves are the wrong way around?
monkey3
If the vents are the wrong way round: at best, you'll get brake fade at worst and if you leave it long enough you may cook the pads and the disks and need to replace both and maybe boil the fluid as well if you brake heavily all the time. Basically, it's a good idea to get them round the right way.
hadyn
Just noticed that the discs are hot to touch after a short non spirited drive in traffic after less than 2 miles. Is this normal?
monkey3
yes, they would be. Are you going to SupraPod?
hadyn
Yeah I'll be there. Im thinking the fact that my flexible brake hoses need replacing might be causing the soft feel of the brakes in day to day driving. However this might be down to just how bad j-spec brakes are
monkey3
Yes, I certainly wouldn't touch the discs if I'd done much more than move it around the drive to be honest. Do you know what discs they are (make \ model)? Are you going to SupraPod?
