Another 4088 bites the dust

Customer car, same turbine blade erosion as the rest. Has anyone got a proper, GENUINE ALL GARRETT one of these in use, bought from a proper Garrtett agent in the UK, not some US hybrid thing? Still convinced some of these are diesel turbos...

If Garrett supply me an original one I'll happily try it for them :D

Seriously though, Garrett may take the stance "what do you expect when buying knock off's from the US", but these "knock off's" may end up generating a reputation that will damage sales of original 4088's just because of the stigma associated with them.

I certainly wouldn't buy another (even an original from Garrett themselves)

I think the problem ones are mean't for diesels.

The problem is, normal punters don't know that till they arrive.

Just to repeat, those with GT4088R's that are watercooled are not included in the "4088" hall of shame. The GT4088R's are genuine as AFAIK we've not seen one go the same way.

Both mine were watercooled R versions, the 1st was totally destroyed, & my current one that although is perfectly fine is starting to show small signs of the onset of this damage

Although mine is SH, it is still fine, only running 1.0 bar though with low EGTs,

Asked a turbo specialist about the problem, and they checked the Garrett specs for both the normal and the R version and the turbine wheel is the same type and material for both, however the exhaust housing is different, make of that what you will.

Hmmm...interesting, I wasn't aware. Who supplied them? And who mapped your car?

They both came from Precision (via Michel), Dan Turner mapped my car for the majority of the 1st turbo, I ran 2 Step & had EGT's of over 1000 where I suspect most of the damage was done (the turbo was white which I believe is a sign of HOT temps).

Ryan is now mapping it for the 2nd turbo, I don't run 2 Step, biggest EGT is 925 in turbo and although it had 1 or 2 nibbles the turbo wasn't showing any of the signs of high temps that the 1st one did. I still think given long enough this one will go the same way.

If youre constantly having trouble Chris why dont you just junt the Garrett unit and go for something else? Im still convinced this is caused by poor material specs causing turbine creep.

I'm not having any trouble ;) I suggested to the customer to use a genuine Garrett turbo on one of Arnout's cast manifolds, and quoted verbatim what would happen with a Yank turbo and a Chinese tubular manifold. Within 5000 miles the manifolds blown once, now it's cracked, and the turbo itself is knackered... :) A real shame, the car is one of the cleanest and un *uggered about with in the UK, and the customer is a nice guy.

I have a genuine garret from the US, wrong fecking flange mind, but its genuine all the same, I have pics of the stamp on my other laptop, dont they all come with Genuine Garrett Part No.s between the compressor and the turbine housing and garret stamps all over the place?

Did you buy from Garrett USA or a trader? anything can be copied these days.

A U.S trader on here, came in a Garret box, tbh I do believe its genuine, it would have to be a very good fake - I agree this could easily be done for the money but then when does it stop?

Garrett U.K will undoubtedly be getting them from the U.S whos to say Vin Diesel and his gang didnt swap the shipment:d

I trust the trader although not his competancy at times;) If it is fake then all those Motec pieces, GReddy, HKS, Innovate, Full Race and all the rest of the brand gang would surely be under question - he must be good with stickers lol
