razza
How reliable are the S4's, especially when they get close to 90/100k miles? I'm talking about the 2.7 bi-turbo ones, round about a 99/00 reg? What's the servicing like cost wise, understand it's 10k and 20k services (a bit better than every 4.5k...)? Anyone owned one? I know they're not as quick as the supe on the straights, but with 4WD they'll probably hold it's own on the twisties, if not better, as I believe the 0-60 is about 5.6 secs... Just pondering a replacement (maybe temporary, maybe not).
SilverSoop
Razza, they are reliable as long as they havn't been messed around with... Older models like Y reg's are on a fixed servicing schedule - every 10,000 miles... Newer models on what we call an AVS (Audi Variable Service) and thats generally every 20,000 miles, or thereabout's... This may sound biased but Reading Audi are pants mate just to let you know lol... :-D If you do decide to buy an S4, come to Basingstoke Audi... :-)
wallace9
1. Common problem with Audi concert stereo with tape deck, the volume goes crazy when you turn the dial. It's a problem with the RAM. Need to replace the stereo this will happen to all units eventually, there is no fix from Audi. 2.Central LCD shows lines and is unreadable. Need to be replaced. Due to issue with the connections inside the LCD 3. On early S4 models the turdo's go at around 70,000miles. Expensive as to replace the bottom turbo you have to take the engine out. This is a common problem with the early models. (Audi have now dropped the twin turbo from the S4). 4. The exhaust manifold is twin skinned this brakes and caused a rattling noise at low rev's. Expensive to fix as it requires the engine out can be 40hrs labour. If your lucky the rattling noise may be from a lose heat shield that can be reached with a long cresent. 5. The ABS light can keep comming on due to a faulty sensor.

razza
I'd take it to a audi specialist and not those robbing dealers:p, which hopefully would be cheaper, or maybe even a technician who works for audi might like to earn a little cash at the weekend;)

razza
what's the £ damage at replacing the turbos? Is it better to go for the latter V8 is it?

razza
Thanks for your help and advice, I might have to reconsider until I have enough money for the V8 version instead, as can't be doing with hassle and cost of replacing turbos again.... Pabs
Mate, I almost looked at a few cheap S4's to replace the supra with, but practicality issues aside (for me anyway), decided to look at perhaps a mk4 golf 4motion (v6).... Sound the nuts too, but again, a lot of them have 70k+ miles on now, and cheaper than the S4's! I suppose it depends on your budget though. Its the same all over Audi because it's the Colbornes group which state how much Audi charge on labour, so probably if you were to find an S4, i wouldn't take to a dealer mate! ;-)
razza
budget might be flexed depending on how my negotiations at work go over payrise, but looking around the 6-8k mark at the moment, also depends on how much I get for mine as to what flex I have... adnanshah247
hi, my bro had an S4. very nice cars, punchy fast and brilliant round corners, however there not cars that u can thrash the living crap out of like a supra and expect it to run every day, they do go wrong heavily when you torture them, gearbox being the biggest, engine and everything else r bullet proof. i myself have had a golf V6 4-motion and bora V5, Passat TDI Sport and a Bora TDI Sport. up till 90k the cars are fine, after that the cars have serious problems. especially in auto's the gearbox's go. my passat and my uncle passat both suffered the same problems after 90k. gearbox's needed to be changed which cost 2k+. best thing i can suggest, get one low mileage (make sure it hasnt be clocked!) make sure dude it has a full service history! it will cost a little more but in the long run it will be better for u. Time I got some money BACK off him Haha, i see where you're coming from but no mate, there's not alot on the aftermarket for tuning them... You can chip them but tbh, i wouldn't because believe it or not, these car's are fragile unlike our Supra's... ;-D If you start messing with Audi's, especially the sport car versions, things will break! Did you mean RS4 avant Chris??
Chris Wilson
Sorry, yes, I meant the RS4 estate thing. Not really into Audis. Nice cars but the engine is SO far in front of the front axle line I can't bring myself to accept them as a proper performance car. Same with 911's, although they *are* a triumph of development over design.
