bigcol
Just had a telephonic interview for a job i applied for ages ago and ive been basically offered it, problem is its in Bahrain and the job is operations manager for the new world trade center, running 250 security staff, basically its senior security manager the pay is 45000 BD (bahrain dinars) a year tax free, thats 64.5k sterling, biggest problem is Mrs Col wont move there and the job is totally hands on and 5 days a week, i dont think mrs col would have it if i only got 5 weeks a year off, its working direct for the world trade center and that is owned by the King so i would basically be living and working in the diplomatic quarter of bahrain, yet Mrs Col wont move there so what the hell do i do?? GeordieSteve
For the sake of 2 years of your life you can sort yourself out for the rest of your life. No doubt your diggs will be layed on so outgoings will be at a minimum. Something you'd be nuts not to consider
AlanM
Go for it , couple of years and you are set
Rob Dublin
Bribery is your friend. Chloe handbag and Milano Blahniks with the first pay cheque. (Supra bits with the next one obviously!)

Gaz6002
In my opinion, knowing several people who have done the same thing I'd say you would be silly not to take it mate. Make the most of all that oil money while it lasts

Guest Angry Koala
My mate's dad works in Bahrain and they love it over there. Never mind the salary, do a good job and the unofficial bonuses will see you right. For example he is the foreman of a shipyard repairing Sheikhs yachts. He has agreed to squeeze them in at short notice and as thankyous has had (off the top of my head and at the last count) 3 £2000+ Rolex watches, £10000 cash on 4 separate occasions, a remodelling of his home out there including the £30,000 Philips 100" LCD TV and a new car). Try bribing her with the weather (especially at the moment), the fact you'll earn enough in a couple of years to pay off mortgages etc and still afford to fly back to the UK several times a year and the duty free shopping. He worked in Abu Dhabi previously for 5 years, came back here, bought a £400,000 house cash (no mortgage) which he is renting until they move back permanently and which is now worth £850,000 and considers his current £80k salary beer money...... SilverSoop
If i was you Col, i would do it, you would be silly not to take up this opportunity! If you don't do this, i know that you'll regret it later... It's up to you, lots of money TAX FREE and a good job or stay in this 'great' country and stay with the Mrs... I know what i would do and most member's on here would be doing the me thinks... ;-)
colsoop
You will regret not going, which could lead to resentment. If i had the offer i would have my ticket booked already

ozz
If its just for the money, personnaly I wouldn't go but I don't know what motivates you. If you are happily married why would you want to leave your missus for x years for a few extra bucks? If she has made it clear she doesn't want to go then you are effectively choosing between her and your career. Now if it is to progress your career then that may make it more difficult decision. I'll have the choice to goto Geneva next year but at least that is close enough to come back every two weeks or so paid for. Good luck! Animal
As everyone else says, it's an opportunity not to be missed. Has Mrs. Col fully realised the financial benefit of working there for a few years?
DodgyRog
Speak to your employer's and see if you can arrange a visit to Bahrain with Mrs.Col and go and look at the way of living etc. If she goes and still won't go over then you have a difficult decision to make. If you don't go you will proberbly hold it against her, so proberbly not good for the relationship anyway. These opportunities don't appear to many, so you need to do what you can to make it work, you will regret not taking it for a long time ( believe me I have been there and still regret not taking the opportunity I was offered ). I am sure they will be willing to arrange a trip/tour for you both;)
Faye
Has Mrs Col said what specifically she doesn't like about the idea of going there?
thesword22
its a once in a lifetime oppertunity mate. iwould jump at the chance to do it personally. go aout and explore a bit. like others have said see if you can arrange for the two of you to go and see the lifestyle and the accomodation before you make a decision you may very well regret
gaz1
i had the chance to start work in Dubai starting late September i decided against it but for my own reasons, wifes are easy to come by good jobs are not:D
Nick
The problem with Bahrain is it's full of drunk Saudi's at the weekend. Good place to work and save some cash though, providing you don't blow it all on over priced beer and Russian hookers that is. Women, they always mess up a perfectly good plan.... DaveK
Apparently, I'm in the minority since I agree with Ozz. If you're happily married, I'd think it was an easy decision - unless your marriage vows were "for better or worse, except when I get a job offer in Bahrain". But I would also see if a short visit there would change her mind (assuming she hasn't already been). I'm curious about the people who think you'd be set for life if you worked there for 2 years. Tax free it's a decent some of money, but it's hardly life changing unless you're currently in serious debt.
