SilverSoop Posted August 19, 2008 Share Posted August 19, 2008 I have got 7 GCSE's but you need a grade C or above in Math's which i do not have so would take another year to do that then it's the A levels after that and i am not getting any younger lol, also i have got a baby on the way due in December so would not want to miss out on that so it's a hard decicion. Oh thats a shame... Im going into the RAF early next year and im going to get my qualifications when im in the RAF and then im going to request a move to an application to a pilot. That's the only way for me to do it because by the time i pass my qualifications, i would be cutting it really fine... So, once you join the RAF, you get till 28 to apply for Pilot.. Sounds harsh but better to find out any issues now rather than later on down the road. When I joined the RAF as a pilot, 2 of the guys I joined with were later discharged following follow up medical examinations. I know the Military aircrew medicals are a little more in depth and intense but its got to be worth it for the peace of mind. Especially when you will be paying out 40,000. Is the course JAA/CAA compliant or will you need to undertake a JAA/CAA conversion course having trained under the FAA? Not sure if this applies to ATPL's!? I would think it would be quite detailed though. In the RAF I had full body measurements taken (Anthropometric stuff, effective reach etc..), BMI, urine screening, good old cough test, medical interview, ECG, EEG, eye tests (included general vision and colour tests), retinal scans, visual field test, hearing test, chest x-ray, lung capacity test etc.. It was very comprehensive. I would assume that it would be something reasonably similar. It's amazing what they find. I found out I have a condition on my heart called a p-form or soemthing similar. They did not seem to be very concerned hence I passed my medical. You will only get this lot done in the RAF once you have passed the Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre and have been offered a place. You do this prior to starting at RAF Cranwell. I would have a look on the CAA webpage. I think they have a medical section. I don't think it's very cheap though and I think it has to be done every year (or at least parts of it).
