supra_aero
Is it just me or why does the BBC keep overly praising this girl who has now twice, yes twice failed to deliver and blatantly turned up unfit denying others a chance to run. Very selfish attitude imo. Disgrace to turn up to an olympic event and be in no shape to compete (knowing that before the event, this was not unexpected!). And the nail in the coffin is this has happen twice and she STILL expects to run 2012. Not in my back yard! And Stratford olympic stadium is practically in my backyard! at least I am not alone here http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/olympics/2008/08/paula_deserves_praise_and_plau.html
Gaz6002
Are you going to assassinate her?
DaveK
I completely agree. I've never ever understood why she's supposed to be so wonderful. I could run in a marathon and not finish / come 23rd myself.

Bobbeh
I completely agree. I've never ever understood why she's supposed to be so wonderful. I could run in a marathon and not finish / come 23rd myself. Maybe because she's won 7/8 Marathons she's entered (excluding any Olympics) and that she's the world record holder in that event? The BBC were actually putting her down during the race and were not optimistic at all, they didn't realistically expect her to do anything. Shame for the person who she denied a place though. Charlotte
Why does it stop anyone else entering? Sorry I'm not familiar with Olympic procedures. She did win the New York marathon a few months ago didn't she...?
ivan
She needs to learn when to quit. Once again she opts for the bite size version because she couldn't manage a whole Marathon.
grahamc
One bad day and everyone jumps up shouting, good god! She is bloody good at what she does, and even if she was out of shape, she was still the best chance the UK had. Going by the fact that there was a rather bad stomach bug going around, if she had even a mild version of it, it would have put her off completely. sdavies
We did have someone finish 6th [6 Mara Yamauchi (GB) 2:27:29 ] - she wasn't denied equaling the best Women's Olympic Marathon placing for GB (That kind of got dwarfed by the whole Radcliffe interview!). I was supposed to finish work at 3.30am on that night and had to stay till 5.15am because we needed her result for the story to run- have I posted a gripe? No because we all have shit days and I bet she feels worse than all of us.
Guest damelza
Was it her that weed or did a number 2 or something and everybody went mental about it?
Chewie
Yep it was her who had a dump and then carried on to win the London marathon. Joggers trots as it's known. Nasty!

Indeed she's pretty much the best we have and she's been sh1t out of luck. I appreciate that she wasn't in the best shape, but give the girl a break - she hasn't asked for the coverage you're so upset about... I'd give my right arm to have some of her ability (when fit). marcAB10
sorry but the whole "had a DUMP" has got me in stitches.
michael
I'd give my right arm to have some of her ability (when fit). Odd statement. Don't you already have some of her ability already? I think I'd rather be able to jog a bit and get out of breath but still have 2 arms to be honest. I can get fitter, I can't grow my right arm back. Alex
Indeed but maybe you take things too literally, deciding instead not to see the actual message I was sending.
colsoop
She is easily the best long distance runner we have, even with a potential injury. There may have been doubts about her fitness but if i was an athlete and i had the oppurtunity to represent my country at the olympics then injury doubts or not i would be there ! I suspect that with Paula Radcliffe her sponnsors also have some sway in her decision making process
supra_aero
I dont get it. If I was not prepared, I would not go and let the next youngster gain the wealth of experience and opportunity in going. I don't honestly believe she is the best team GB had to offer, much like our england football team is the best team we could put together. I believe there is some popularity/financial sponsorship incentive to have let her run. Granted I have not conducted an investigation to prove this but it seems odd such a relatively older athelete who has now twice failed to finish 2 olympics marathons in a row now without problems is the best marathon runner we could give the spot to. I just dont like the way the BBC lets her steal the limelight and still bigs her up despite that performance (and the one before last). I judge performance on results. No other athlete who fails to prepare and comes outside 6th place or lower gets so much credit so why does she? I and friends of mine are good atheletes at certain sports but that doesnt mean they would want to go to 2012 to compete, because we know we are not olympic level. And that is true even if I did win gold 12 years ago.
Bobbeh
At the end of the day it was a gamble. No one knew how well she'd do after a leg fracture like she suffered. It wasn't down to lack of preparation on her part. Plus, at least now she's finished a marathon unlike the disappointment in Athens.. and who knows, maybe she'll make history in 2012!? (providing she's fit of course)
