Gaz6002
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/fairdealfordrivers/2573876/Spy-in-the-sky-paves-way-for-road-pricing.html Soon driving will be a rare treat in this country. Such a shame. Still, less cars on the roads means more fun for the people left on the roads eh? Well, nope. We'll all have these satnav units installed and once we go over the speed limit we'll get fined again and probably put in prison or hung. I'm going to start saving for an island of my own. The Treasury earmarked millions of pounds for the pilots in the budget and Chancellor Alistair Darling believes the scheme could be crucial in cutting congestion in the long-term. Well at least they are using the money they have got wisely.
tonyhawk
They tried to trial this scheme a couple of years back, but public opinion was so against it that the government said that they wouldn't bring it in......a government going back on their word.... surely not?.... jamesmark
Good idea, I think all cars should be limited to 55mph!!!!!!!! Go the Government.

tonyhawk
The thing is, we already have extortionate pay-per-mile road tax, it's called petrol!
miko_supra
This government are money making genius's
Rob
How will it "cut congestion" exactly? By making motoring so expensive it forces people off the road, out of jobs and onto a life of reliance on the welfare state.
Rob
Aaand another thing, if we end up paying per mile, will the Govt remove other taxes like VED? IF VED is removed what incentive is there to buy an economic car? If I'm going to pay £1.30 a mile to sit in traffic into a major city, I might as well do it in a luxury 4x4 rather than pokey Perodua or Smart. SilverSoop
So, we pay insurance to be on the road which is TAXED. Fuel to run the cars. The fuel is TAXED. We pay road TAX also to be on the road which has just recently risen even though our country produces the LEAST Co2 and TAXED per mile as the latest fad?! Let me work that out...Labour = robbing b***ards!
Gaz6002
They do mention that some other duties will be cut at the same time to keep it manageable. I reckon that's a load of bull.
tonyhawk
If they can tax, they will; if they bring it in, they will probably lower the other taxes as an incentive, then raise them in time.
n boost
U cant win in this country, the Gov't have lost the plot and are money making bunch of ar$ewipes and bullys. They will do whatever they can push out as there is no one to stop them and dont give a $hit about the people in the there country.
AlexM
So what happens when we chop that little cable and no longer become tracable on the sat?
Rob
So what happens when we chop that little cable and no longer become tracable on the sat? That will probably be a criminal offence, another thing this Govt. likes to do is introduce new laws.
tonyhawk
How about a switch?...
SilverSoop
That will probably be a criminal offence, another thing this Govt. likes to do is introduce new laws. Yep thats exactly what they will do. In this country, it's a worse crime to not pay taxes than to actually kill someone...

bolarbag
I thought this country was a Democracy - when are the Gov't going to start representing its people, through the thoughts of its people - rather than a mindless few who are after everything they can muster! Another Tick for reasons to up and leave, I think I'm on 2049 now!! All in the aid of congestion???? - are they forgetting we all have to be somewhere otherwise we wouldnt be on the bleeding potholed roads!! Let's be honest who the hell goes for a 'casual drive' during rush hour!!? p.s Doesnt 'The Telegraph' continuously spout shiiiiii%%?

Nathman
Up to £1.30 a mile for peak periods, that means my 214 mile round trip to the office every friday would cost me £278.20!! Madness!
Gaz6002
carnt see this happening imho, surly its to do with human rights and all that when they are tracking everyone and seeing what they are up to and when, i just carnt see it. Since when did this government give a sh1t about human rights? They've been watching us via CCTV and on the 'net for years. It's not such a huge leap between now and a future where all traffic is monitored via satalite. Then how long until cars drive themselves? The pink squashy bit behind the wheel won't be necessary soon.

Then i read this; An old lady who didnt pay her council tax gets jailed! Where's the fairness and jutice in that?! I hate this Government!
