Rattling flywheel

Recommended Posts

I have a ratting sound when the car is hot, seems to be coming from the bellhousing, also when i switch the engine off i get a rattle and makes no difference if i press the clutch, so i think its the flywheel damper, My question is can i leave it or will it fail alltogether or damage anything else,

Cheers.

I have removed some that were very noisy, I have never seen one fail though. I would expect them to be designed in a fail safe manner, you wouldn't want it acting as buzz saw. You are sure it's not loose on the crank? That WOULD cause some damage, very quickly. You should be able to assess this through the inspection plate holes.

It could be what happened to mine, which is where the flywheel had managed to rattle the bolts loose (don't know how) but if it is this then I wouldn't recommend driving it because if the bolts do come off and the flywheel comes off then it will more than likely write the car off and possibly do alot of injury to yourself as the one time I saw it happen, the flywheel came off, it then ripped through the bell housing and through the bodywork and then into the passenger side footwell .
