bignum
I have a ratting sound when the car is hot, seems to be coming from the bellhousing, also when i switch the engine off i get a rattle and makes no difference if i press the clutch, so i think its the flywheel damper, My question is can i leave it or will it fail alltogether or damage anything else, Cheers. Chris Wilson
I have removed some that were very noisy, I have never seen one fail though. I would expect them to be designed in a fail safe manner, you wouldn't want it acting as buzz saw. You are sure it's not loose on the crank? That WOULD cause some damage, very quickly. You should be able to assess this through the inspection plate holes.
miko_supra
I have a rattly fly wheel and it doesn't make a sound stationary or when i turn the engine off. Just when i the engine is in gear at low rpm (under 2k) and under load. i would get it checked to see that its not something else as cw has said

little num
hi big num, just use a few tubes of silicon and pump it in the inspection holes this should make it a bit quieter or if not will sort the problem for sure lol.

Dazzi
I've got the similar symptoms as miko_supra. No rattle when cold, switched off or stationary but once warmed up and around 3-4k revs I can feel a slight vibration on the gear knob and a loud rattle noise outside the car. johnd-mkiv
mine was clunking when the car was on over run with a slight rattle too it turned out to be the flywheel buggered, my dad wanted to see how the dual mass flywheel worked so attempted to strip it down but after an hour or so he gave up
marc_p
It could be what happened to mine, which is where the flywheel had managed to rattle the bolts loose (don't know how) but if it is this then I wouldn't recommend driving it because if the bolts do come off and the flywheel comes off then it will more than likely write the car off and possibly do alot of injury to yourself as the one time I saw it happen, the flywheel came off, it then ripped through the bell housing and through the bodywork and then into the passenger side footwell . Right... That might be me out of the Lakes Run then. Time to get it looked at, im not risking it.
