Alternative Rear Fog Light Conversion Using Octal Relay

Gents,

Anyone contenplating this mod to a Jspec Supra just might find the two-relay mods a little cumbersome to do, so here is my conversion using a 12Volt Octal relay to simplify the wiring changes.

Please refer to the attached PDF which shows the connections used so that each side of the Octal relay operates both near and offside rear lights.

This alternative follows the other methods in locating the rear brake light wiring in the harness at each rear light unit and connecting the green feed wire direct to one of the rear lights which will remain as a brake light only......the other brake light(inner at each unit) will become the combined brake/fog light.

The octal relay shown on the PDF is in the un-energised state and shows the inner light operating as a brake light. When the relay is energised, the inner lamps are connected to the fog-light feed(switch on dash), the relay energises and the fog feed goes directly to the inner bulbs.

I feel the beauty of this conversion is that it only requires one relay and simplifies the wiring mods(which hopefully will be obvious from the PDF).

For those who are "purists" the fog light switch could be fed through a single pole relay taking its coil power from the front fog light(light-on) wiring. I'm afraid, not being a purist, I connected mine up to the cigarette lighter feed, increasing the fuse rating there to 15Amps........it can now operate just the inner lights for those other motorists that tail-gate me......just to warn them away from the rear of my car!

Let me know if anyone needs more info on this and if moderators feel its a worthwile alternative to the other mods shown, feel free to re-post in the Techy/How To page.

Rgds
