gordy07
Im collecting my new master cylinder gasket on thursday and wondered if anyone has changed theirs or have you only changed the whole cylinder. All i need to change is the small gasket between the alloy bit the resevoir sits on and the cylinder drum itself. I gather i will have to bleed the brakes after i change it but do i have to drain the brake fluid before i start this might sound silly to you all but ive never done anything like this before. Thanks in advance:)

Dave F
I refurbed my master cylinder last year and changed the gasket, just undo the two nuts move the cylinder and slide on the new one. How come you are just changing the gasket?
gordy07
Cheers dave. I was changing the pads and when i was pushing the pistons back in to fit the new pads i never removed the fluid filler cap and it burst this seal/gasket. Silly me! When you say just remove 2 bolts and slide on new gasket did you do this when it was all fitted to the car and full of fluid etc
Dave F
Are you talking about the brown cardboard type gasket or a cylinder seal fella?
Homer
Good topic, need to do the same on mine. Perhaps a stupid question, but does the brake fluid need to be drained to remove the master cylinder from the brake booster (or 'big black cylinder thing' as I call it)? Dave F
To fully remove the master cylinder you have to really undo the brake lines from it as they are not that flexible but theoretically you can remove the cylinder without draining the fluid. gordy07
Dave i think its the cardboard type one, well the new one was 75pence from toyota so it cant be that fancy.
Dave F
That'll be the one. You can bend the hard brake pipes a certain amount so if I was you I would undo the two nuts push the cylinder away, slide the new gasket on then the cylinder and then do up the nuts. I would the as a precaution give the system a bleed to be on the safe side.

Darryl, you don't need to remove the fluid from the res.
gordy07
Yes mate you did give instructions for removal but i thought they were for removing the whole master cylinder not just the part i need to. Sorry buddy i will look at the instructions you gave me previously before fitting tommorow! Cheers
gordy07
Changed the gasket today it was a doddle:d Thats me back on the road after nearly 3 weeks yipee:) I went out today for a nice drive to brake in the new pads. The only problem is a rubbing sound from the back nearside i think maybe one of the calipers may be slightly seized on the rear after just freeing off the front this is typical. But i dont mind too much because at least i know how to sort it now. Thanks all for advice again especialy col and dave cheers lads;)
