Testing for boost leaks

Recommended Posts

My car is fully BPU now but im only making 0.9 bar boost but sometimes it will spike to around 1.3bar so first thought is a boost leak in a pipe somewhere, whats the best way of testing for this. I was thinking of using a foot pump with a one way washer jet valve then just pump it up and see if the pressure is released anywhere.

Is there any better ways of doing this and would that work?

If its not a leak what else could cause the low boost, my boost controller?

How do you reset it? just pull the power??

I've got a HKS too and can never get more than 0.9 bar, no matter what I input, I went to the Nurburgring and was only getting 0.6 bar!!! was still fun though lol!!

No there is a guide in the manual but basicly you turn on the ignition then power off the EVC5 flip the switch on then off again on the back of the controll unit (OP / SW) and it will beep, then just power it back on and its reset ill try find the pdf again.

Good guide I also found ....

Now you need to set it up.

If you got it used, re-set it.

Turn on ignition (don't start car).

Push and hold PWR/SEL button on control unit. It will shut off.

Push and hold it again, while holding it, flip switch on back of control unit from SW to PO (or PO to SW).

Let off PWR/SEL button.

Flip switch back to original position. It will beep

Turn ignition off and back on.

Turn the power back on by holding down the PWR/SEL button.

Now set the switch on the back to proper setting.

SW for internal wastegate, PO for external.

Now it's re-set.

Now you can set warning values.

Decide on a target boost for mode A and B.

I used 20.5 and 19 PSI (141kPa and 131kPa)

PSI X 6.895 = kPa

Press the MOD button 3 times. A "3" should display on top left.

Now add 10kPa (2psi) to those numbers (this will be your warning values).

Use SEL/"up" or SEL/"down" to enter the settings. Push PWR/SEL button on the control unit to toggle between the two modes (A or B).

Now set the boost for A and B. (done on control unit)

Set "A" boost. Push PWR/SEL to select the "A-volume". It will light up red.

press the knob, it will pop up. Turn it all the way counter clockwise. (you'll see the corresponding volume value on the display unit)

Now turn it clockwise. Start around a volume of 65.

You need to go out and drive the car.

In 3rd or 4th gear, do pulls from 2500rpms until you get max boost. A second boost gauge is better as the EVC reads a little low.

Now turn up the volume in small increments until you get to your goal boost setting. Once there, push the volume button back in. It's now set.

push the PWR/SEL button to toggle over to "B" and do the same thing.

Now your done.

You can reset the peak/hold function by pushing and holding in the SEL/"up" button on the display.

There are other things to set-up but I won't go into them here: Scramble boost, Lock code.

Happy boosting!!
