Dual Solenoid or single solenoid

Branners

Recommended Posts

Im looking at getting a boost controller and Im looking at the usual suspects

Apexi AVCR

Blitz SBC-ID

Blitz DSBC Type R (dual sol)

Blitz DSBC Type S (single sol)

Anybody got any recommendations or comments?

Why would I want a dual solenoid over a single solenoid, and is the SBC-ID worth the money?

The dual solenoid unit can handle higher boost levels, so it depends on your plans.

Not sure of the exact levels, but i think they are shown on the Jap Blitz site.

The AVCr is very tunable but therefore highly complex. I've got to set mine up once a CW restrictor plate is in place, and I'm not looking forward to it. It's a nice blue, though, and the speedo on it is very accurate.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Branners,

I am putting an SBC-ID & PowerMeter ID in the Supra. Several reasons for this:

Apexi Boost Solenoids are absolutely crap (I broke one in the Rover within 6 months, thats £150 please)

The SBC-ID is notably more advanced than even the AVC-R, contrary to popular belief (although the AVC-R does look trick)

The Apexi is affected by temperature unlike Blitz/HKS/Greddy as they decided to use cheap boost sensor components.

By the way, the SBC-ID & Power Meter ID can be had from the states inc 3 day delivery for £480.

hmm, I better ask how much.

Im getting the gear as payment for work done so its not as if Im having to pay for it which is why I have the choice. I originally thought AVCR as its nice and blue, but the SBC-ID might be a better way forward, I have always liked the Blitz stuff.

Barry might want the DSBC from Leon, I will see how much he wants for it.

I might also have a Mongoose full exhaust system for sale as Im probably getting a Blitz Nur Spec as part of the deal as well. So anybody want a mongy? Slightly louder than stock, full system including downpipe, modified to fit an import....£300

Minor additional comments - CW backs up your opinion of the solenoids on the Apexi units. Mine isn't dead yet, but knowing my luck I'll be the first to report it's gone 'boing' soon.

Also, the boost pressure sensors on mine are mounted near the throttle cam, and therefore get a reasonably large amount of engine heat but they are spot on accurate when compared side by side with a mechanical boost gauge, so experience says they aren't *that* susceptible to heat.

I'm not defending the Apexi stuff, just adding my observations for info.

Ian,

Sorry, I actually meant charge temp rather than engine bay temp.

Mine used to be set at a .9 bar, used to hit 1.2 often and 1.4 a couple of times.

I'd seen the DSC which looks similar but if that site is right then I take it back.

Worth checking this with Racelogic though incase this web site is wrong

I went through the Blitz JP site and its not on their product list or their new products list, but there does seem to be an online manual for the SBC-ID 2 so it does appear it exists...you just cant buy it from Blitz :moo:

Having read all the info I think its the SBC-ID for me, along with a Blitz Nurspec and Blitz airfilter with full metal enclosure. That should give me the power I want.

Has anybody else attached any other 'things' to the SBC-ID? It has 4 inputs doesnt it? So you can monitor charge temps and whatnot with the right equipment?

Yeah, yeah thats right - Its just been out and Racelogic hardly ever update thier site...

Thats one of the big benefits on the SBC branners. You can buy a harness (hard to find, but I think MVP Motorsports has one):

Blitz SBC-id Harness - ITEM # Bl SBC-id Harness

Optional harness for the SBC-id that allows the display of such things as Water temperature; Oil pressure; Throttle Position Sensor; Air/Fuel Ratio; & Injector Pulse

Your Price $50.00

So it replaces about 4/5 guages altogether!

I was hoping it would do EGT as the main gauges everybody should have are boost and EGT. With those two you can pretty much tell if the car is running badly or is about to blow up.

JB

Branners,

Those features are just with the additional harness.

If there is aux ports on it, then you may be able to do that also?

I've got the optional harness and can tell you that it basically has 3 data wires (the 4th is an earth) and you tap them to different wires on your ECU...

I've tapped the intake temp sensor, the throttle position sensor and I want to tap the O2 sensor...but its a pig to get at.

Once attached you have to calibrate the data recieved by the unit to actually make it mean anything.

For example I had to tell it that the throttle position was between 0 and 100 then I had to find the right fully open and fully closed voltages. etc etc....could be quite useful...really must attach the o2 sensor to it.
