Rob
Are those Halfords type temporary exhaust repairs suitable for the massive Supra backthrust? My pipe is blowing somewhere between the joint betwixt 5-Zigen backbox and standard downpipe. I'm thinking of the wraparound foil things that jubilee clip on, on whether it will last a week. francesca
When I had my landrover I was always patching the exhaust, had two methods depending on position & severity: 1. cut the ends off a drinks can so you have a roll, spread exhaust paste & jubilee clip in position over hole then wrap with bandage (can do two 'layers' like this) 2. split a short section of exhaust lengthways (PITA to do) exhaust paste & jubilee clip. Obviously second one more durable - most of my exhaust was made of this! - but the can version holds for a while. I found the foil in the kits absolutely useless, blew straight off. I had no silencers & twin tail pipes - you think the supra is loud..!! (Edited by francesca at 6:21 pm on Mar. 15, 2002)
Rob
All the bloody drive belts are screeching now, so looks like I'll have to turn up to Bolney in the German car now. Typical. UK's biggest Jap car meet and mine throws in the towel.
Andy Metcalfe
Rob, Quick fix for the exhaust.......try using silicon sealer or mastic (bath sealer etc) to cover any parts that are blowing!! Racing bikes use this to seal there exhaust systems and i know from past experience its a good short-term fix!! Just run the car for a short while to warm the pipes and then smear around the leak and wait for it to dry before running it again! SORTED! As for the squealing belts......mine sometime do this , but it soon sorts itself out!!PANIC OVER!!!
Rob
Seriously Andy? The stuff I've been using to do my bath two weeks ago will take all that heat? How short term is short term though, as I want to go to Bolney from Dartford, but then onto Brighton to meet our gay wedding cake designer. As for belts, it's been very damp today. I wonder if I put the bonnet seal on the right way after removing/refitting the liner last week? I'll give Francescas idea a go though. I have a good condition stock cat back system here, for the TT, which I THINK will staright swap, if it's any help. Cheap...
Phil Wall
I have tried the foil stuff before on other cars, it is usless. It only lasted and 40 miles. The drink can fix of Franseca's sounds a good one.
Rob
Thanks for the offer Chris, but I'll check under car tomorrow to see where the hole is, most likely to be the junction between cat pipe and backbox pipe. Trouble is the car currently does 1.5 miles to work and then 1.5 miles back, which is bad news as I am sure you know.
Andy Metcalfe
Rob, serious about the sealer mate! I`ve used it on many exhausts and have had no problem with them since! Depends on the size of the whole and the where abouts of the whole (i.e. how much pressure its under) I bodged up my old pug 309 gti backbox 4 months ago and it went through its MOT with it like this and is still holding out!!! Try it mate-oyu may be pleasantly surprised!:cheesy:
Rob
Tried and failed to get the old exhaust off today, mainly because there wasn't much room under the car on axle stands, and I couldn't get the spannerage. But what a stiff chassis the Supra has, it will stand on two axle stands at the front and a jack at one side at the rear with all four wheels off the ground. Guest Martin F
Man i hope that's not a Targa you have.....:o
Rob
No, it's not a targa. I was very impressed though. Have to admit that I really don't like being under a car on axle stands. All I could hear was Michael Buerks voice and that "ticking" music "By now he had been trapped under the crushing weight for two hours, and his girlfriend was still in the bath, with the radio on." Adam W
Surely you're fine under axle stands - that's the whole point of using them! I thought it went "Never get under a car that is only supported by a jack (any jack)" but you put axle stands under there as a safety thing. Guest Martin F
I have heard of some people twisting chassis when jacking up cars with Targa's removed and similar 'sunshine' type cars. Can you imagine going to put your targa top back in a few hours later only to find it won't fit properly..... :o
Adam W
My mates old Triumph Spitfire needed a jack under the middle to get the hard top ON! Severely floppy car :o
