TERAPINS!!! i have had a tarantula, snake, lizards, rabbits, hamsters and parrots. out of all the pets i have had my terapins since they hatched (one 2 years ago and the other 1 year ago) i have never ever thought of getting rid of them. there very good animals and very very smart. something different!!! i have some old pictures of them which i have posted. trust me there brilliant. i will get some more to show how they grow but these pics are when the little year old one was a newbie. also theres a nice pic of the type of snake i used to have!

Tortoise, but do your research cos they need some specialist stuff to keep them going. They're pretty cool though and may well outlive your son.

Never had any other reptiles so can't comment on snakes and dragons and stuff.

Other than that, we've had hamsters and rats, the rats were FAR better pets than the hamsters. How about taking your missus to the pet shop and looking at rats, I'm guessing it'll be the pink eyes she won't like, so look at the grey ones without pink eyes (then it's just the tail to get over :D ).

I wanted to get a chipmunk, but they need a bigger cage than we had.

Look how cute they can be:

That's stuart (little).

And next to his older brother Graham:

These aren't mine BTW, pics from a friend, some of hers are show winners as well (yes, they do have rat shows). Here's Graham smiling:

And Neil winning some rosettes:

If he is 4 its probably best not o get him something as small as a rat or hamster as kids tend to squeeze anything thats small and these types of pets move quickly.

How a about a Guinea Pig or a rabbit, very freindly slow and soft - although dont get both in a cage together as the rabbit (if its male) may think its another rabbit and try to hump it, then you will need to take the Guinea pig to counciling....

Ok i have gone to far, must be the flu i have :)

What about a ferret?! ;)

When I was very little my dad used to breed them and we had loads. Kept them outside in a tiered hutch thing. I know they get bad press but are really great pets! Can be walked on a leash too (if you're into that kinda thing :taped:).

I used to walk mine round in my pram, up and down the street! Used to scare all the little old dears when they used to come over to see what they thought was my doll inside!

(It was the welsh valleys ok? Nothing better to do! [OOPS][/OOPS])

I had loads of Hamsters when I was a kid, they are nocturnal and when they're awake spend the entire night gnawing the cage!

My cousin had a chipmunk, ferocious little thing!

I also had 2 terrapins, they were cool but quite delicate for a 4 year old I'd say.

My mate has a bearded dragon, no offense to people who own one but surely the most pointless pet ever! They don't do anything, just sit there all day conserving energy.

I take the piss out of my mate's for being an expensive ornament. Whenever it moves it's head my mate says ' look Conrad, it just moved'. I think he's trying to prove me wrong but I'm not convinced! :D

Rats on the other hand, they sound cool. Show your missus themovie Ratatouille to change her mind...

Is this pet for your son or is it an excuse for you to have one? At 4 years old they are far too young to learn about responsibility of caring for pets. Buy him something to keep his mind occupied. What will happen to the pet when he gets to 4 1/2 years old and he has moved onto something else?

Guinea Pig all the way.

I had one that would fall asleep on you and let himself out of his cage to come and stand at the kitchen door for his tea.

I've got 6 that are free to good homes in the next two weeks, I have mine in the living room, they are sociable but they don't mind being left alone. They don't bite either. Plus if he handles it as much as I did then he'll be as friendly as mine.

Surely 4 is too young for a pet? The 4 year olds I've seen would be interested for about 5 mins once a week then forget all about them. Why not get him a toy that he can throw in the corner and leave when he isn't interested, else you'll just end up forcing him to look after/play/clean the animal out and that isn't fair on the kid or animal. When he's older get him something he can really appreciate and love and be responsible for and bond with.

I think it's fine to get a pet for a 4 year old, but only as long as you understand that it is a family pet, not 'his' pet, and you and the missus will be doing 95% of the work involved.

You have to get a pet that you won't mind being completely responsible for, and won't get annoyed when he gets bored and doesn't want to clean it out etc.

If you're going for a tortoise or something like that, it's a good idea to get it when the kid's young TBH.

You mean, just get a pet for yourself and let the kid tell his mates he's got a pet when really he hasn't?

Pretty much. I thought that was basically the idea anyway. Isn't that what most families do?

//edit: Anyway, he does have a pet, it doesn't belong to one person it's a family pet! I used to have a great dane (I didn't have a GD, my parents did, but it was still my dog as well).
