JustGav
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7550354.stm Russian forces are locked in fierce clashes with Georgia inside its breakaway South Ossetia region, reports say, amid fears of all-out war. Obviously the olympics has overshadowed this, which is rather convenient personally, but this doesn't look good.
Wez
Russia has picked a perfect time to do it, all focus will be on the Ollympics.

ivan
The Russian Bear flexes it's muscles again as Georgian PM protests against Russian invasion "All becauseski of a small rebellion which we Georgianski's could sort given enough time!!!" USA gets behind Georgia and no doubt the EU will now form GFOR (pronounced "Guffaw") to clear up the SNAFU!!!! America will recruit a new 'Team America, World Police' Squad to show Europe how to get out of the 'Credit Crunch' they've created by spending even more money on a war scenario where troops are undervalued and under equipped. I wait with anticipation the British Government's new Recruitment advertising campaign!!!! Nicknamed 'Options for More Change' the aim will be to re-instate the British Army to something like a fighting strength again. Thank god I've only got 2 more years before they can't call me up. ivan
A lot of the invading 'soldiers' are just volunteers from the areas around Georgia that are still aligned with Russia. Doesn't make the bullets they fire any less lethal though. Seeing as the BP oil pipeline from the region runs right through Georgia, I'll not be at all surprised when the US becomes militarily involved in this mess. And when you consider that there is supposed to be a joint Georgian/UK excercise near Tbilisi next month... Hold onto your hats folks, this could be a bumpy ride. Not so strange that the senior British official for BP was kicked out of Russia recently now is it?

colsoop
The russians have been looking for an excuse for a while. They are almost surrounded by NATO aligned - pro western countries and they are becoming increasingly isolated which in their very paranoid state is not a good thing for them. They need the little breakaway sectors "South Ossetia" to keep their foot in the door. It is obvious to me that they are not as the Russians claim protecting this small breakaway state, they have started bombing strategic targets in Georgia's ports and other military targets. I hope im wrong but it looks a bit like they are on a land grab, which i hope isn't the case as this could seriously increase the problem. The Russians are also worried about the energy pipelines which Georgia controls and Europe has started to rely on. Energy is the only power Russia has left. Georgias pipelines take some of that away from Russia and they don't like it one bit. As they can no longer blackmail the west and get their way on political issues. They have blown up the pipeline in the past (allegedly) and i bet you that the pipeline is a target during the current fighting Expect there to be more fighting in the future. The next wars will be "energy wars"
