Hi i have recently decatted my exhaust and wondered what is the best for money boost controller and how easy are they to fit???? :respekt:

I LOVE SUPRAS

They're pretty easy to fit. I fitted my GReddy E-01 in less than an hour and that was taking it easy.

Which is the best value for money is a difficult question to answer. The E-01 is certainly one of the very best ones but it ain't cheap at approx £300

I have the Blitz SBC id III and to be totally honest, I'm dissapointed with it. I can't get it to hold a particular boost. :complain:

Even in the setting where you can select a boost level, I couldn't get it to keep a constant boost. It seems as if weather (air temp) effects it massively.

I'm sure I've heard people say that they can get it to work, but I'm always over boosting, and having to lift off to some degree, or not making the boost that I want when flat out. Quite expensive too if bought from certain retailers. I bought mine in combination with the powermeter from Japan (takakaira.com) and saved myself over £200.

That depends, with a restrictor only you will get quite big differences in boost depending on the temperature etc. Also the boost will build more gradually - with a decent boost controller you can bring max boost in earlier. The E01 has a facility to set the max boost you want, then when you reach it it will reduce the duty cycle of the boost solenoid to keep boost below that level. You can also vary boost by RPM, although I'm not sure why you would. There is one controller that lets you vary things by what gear you are in, which would be good because you get more boost in higher gears so need less assistance from the controller.

Am I correct in thinking that with a boost controller fitted (e-01 for example) you don't need a restrictor ring? i.e. the boost controller can keep the boost below a set level on its own?

No, you can't lower it below the normal boost of the engine. All a controller does is bleed off pressure to make the wastegate open at a higher than normal boost. E.g. say normally the wastegate opens at 1BAR. The wastegate can't flow enough air out the way with a decatted car, so boost builds to 1.3BAR say. All a boost controller can do is delay the wastegate opening. It can't change the fact that the wastegate can't flow enough air.

What you can do though is use a restrictor ring to hold boost at 1BAR say, and then use the controller to set what level of boost above that you want.

I've got the E-01, and although it only took me 15 minutes to install (I was removing an SBC), the thing that took me 6 months to sort was the fitting of the screen. Finally got it installed into the glovebox 2 weeks ago.

I liked the SBCs looks, but the screen is far too small to see easily. The E-01 is soo much easier to see.

Noob question: If the restrictor ring is limiting boost to say 1BAR, how can the BC then raise it above that?

Anyone got a definite level on when the TRL cuts boost?

The ring is just used to limit the standard flow of thexhaust, a boost controller can increase the flow over the standard rate, with the downside of extra heat.

Seeing as this thread has been totally hijacked (sorry Jimbo!), may as well use it to ask another question :)

Is the E-01 suitable to use as a boost gauge? I've seen LCD screens on boost controllers before but they just seemed too slow to refresh and difficult to read to get a decent instantaneous reading from, is the E-01 any better?

You can use the E-01 as a gauge, but I much prefer a dial gauge than an lcd, as it doesn't have that "grey" area and is much easier to see immediately. Hence why I also have a Blitz TTimer with vacuum fed gauge, and a HKS dial with electrical input.

The E-01 is a very good boost gauge. If you use it in graph mode, you can see the last 30 seconds of boost (or something like that)

Easy to read too.

Sorry Jake, difference of opinion, I suppose it also helps as to where it is mounted. IMHO I prefer the HKS dial gauge. My E-01 is located in the glovebox though and only comes out to impress people.

That's odd, I'm the other way around. I had both types of gauge in my RZ but I never looked at my dial gauge once I got used to the e-01. I like that you can look at the gauge 10 secs after you hit peak and clearly see what boost you just hit. (Without having to mess about with recall buttons or anything)

No worries Ben mate, everyone has their own preferences.

No wonder you didn't get used to the e-01 if it's in your glovebox ! :D

It spent 5 1/2 months hidden behind the passanger seat mate!! LOL!!! :read:

I think it's down to this and the fact the HKS gauge is right in my face in a pillar pod that I think that it's easier to see. I just see the E-01 as jumping large "blocks" whereas the needle just seems to flow smoothly, IYSWIM.
