gordy07
I changed my front pads today as i changed the rears a couple of months ago. It all started well i done the near side in about 10 minutes no problems whatsoever. Then i went to change the offside ones i got the old pads out no problem just took the 2 bolts out and pulled the caliper off as before. I put the new pads in and then slowly compressed the pistons back in and looked under the car to see a stream of brake fluid pi$$ing on to my driveway:( When i opened the bonnet the brake fluid resevoir was full to the brim and leaking just where it joins the master cylinder. So i took excess fluid out till it was on the max line. I thought that would be it but when i put everything back together and pressed the brake pedal a few times fluid was still coming out. I know its hard to think without a picture but its just where the alloy bit joins the master cylinder.I dried it off and went for a gentle drive and when i returned there was even more fluid leaking. Have i burst a gasket or seal??? Any help much appreciated;)
Swampy442
Did you take the resevoir cap off? If not then youve blown a seal. Having never done it dont take this as gospel, but dont think its a massive job to change that seal. On a personal note, youre a bloody fool driving a car about with a known brake issue, especially when its the master cylinder and you could introduce air into the system, massively reducing brake power. SteveR
pushing the calipers back to make room for new (thicker) pads shoves fluid out of the way - you're meant ot remove the filler cap on the resivior and keep an eye on it so it doesn't overspill, if you didn't then it sounds likely that you have bust a seal. gordy07
I know i am a fool i was only doing what i knew and have changed pads on every car ive owned and not known to remove the fluid cap before now.I cant beleive i was so stupid. Is it a big job to replace the seal ive probably fooked. PS i only drove round the block very slowly(10-15 mph)
SteveR
Is it a big job to replace the seal ive probably fooked. I don't know, sorry. At least it's one of the most accesible bits under the bonnet so finger crossed. I'd give your brakes a thorough bleed to remove any air after you've sorted this all out. I'd be tempted to maybe change the fluid entirely, just for good measure.

gordy07
Is there any type of brake fluid i should purchase!
colsoop
Edit: I re-read your post now im awake and think i am talking about a different part to you: Do you mean the 2 rubber grommets that the reservoir sits on to ? If so then you just need to remove the reservoir via the screw that holds it in place this will free it from the MC. No mate its the alloy bit thats bolted to the master cylinder with 2 bolts either side. Its facing the steering wheel if that makes any sense;)
colsoop
See attached picture, is it leaking from No 1 or No 2. Or neither

colsoop
With luck you have just compromised the gasket and replacing it with a new one will do the job. Ther gasket is very thin and if like the one i removed on mine is probably passed its best anyway. Gasket is 47275-12020 "gasket master cylinder" £0.75 Removing the MC: Remove the throttle cable bracket, and push the throttle cable out the way Undo the 2 brake lines (put cloth under the lines) remove the fluid level sensor on the res Undo the 2 bolts (12mm i think) This should free up the master cylinder for you to inspect it.
