Daston
How do people? As you lot seem far more pro active and like getting your hands dirty I though I would ask you (TVR lot seems to have the same answer for everything "take it to the dealership") It sounds like my timing chain on the top cams is loose (getting a metal on metal clunk on idle and she's a bit lumpy at low speeds). I have been advised to take the cam cover off to check for ware as the chain will scratch the metel when it hits. First Question, what should I use to cover the cam's whilst they are exposed? the last thing I want is for something drop in there. Second Question, the cam cover uses a silicon seal (whats wrong with a gasket!!!!) now this may be a real stupid question but everyones got to start somewhere right? I am guessing that on the head there will be a channel where the silicon will go and then the cover goes in this channel and forms a seal (bit like the front headlights on the supra) would this guess be correct? What I dont want to do is take it off then find I need to seal the gap between the 2 with sealent as I am unable to get to the back of the engine as it sits too close to the rear bulkhead. Cheers guys Dave
tonyhawk
I'm not an expert on cam chains, but they can wear (as can the sprockets they sit on) or stretch; I'd look for the exaggerated 'U' shape on the sprockets where the chain might have worn them, also the chain links might be loose. Also check the correct tension for them, if the tensioner is ok, and you still have slack, then they might be stretched and need replacing? The only thing I would suggest when looking is to put the cam covers back over once you've finished poking around, but I guess if you want to make sure nothing gets in there, then just cover them with some plastic? The cam covers may have a ridge, but I'm not sure on that car; some don't and just have a gasket to seal the two flat surfaces. If it states to use sealant then it would be logical to assume there was a channel for it, but they are a British design I'm not sure that's helped you though
tonyhawk
Does the chain tensioner automatically adjust on your car, or is it manually set?
Daston
The tensioner is set manualy, apparently the material that pushes against the chain can ware down and the tension gets less and less. From some of the stories the Speed Six is defently a contact engine so dont want the chain to be coming off lol. Also if the chain needs replacing its an engine out job so cross fingures it either needs a new tensioner or just a little bit of adjustment. Below is a pic of the chain layout. The cam chain adjuster is just below the left cam.
Daston
well on the up side dosnt seem to be the change, downside is it could be tappets or valve. Going to get it trailered town to the local TVR independant for them to service it and have a look. Figures crossed it dosnt need another rebuild. Although new credit card arrived to day (good timing lol)
tonyhawk
Hope you get it sorted, it's a very nice car. Post updates
Daston
Well she got trailered down to Dulford Automotive today so should hear soon what the damage is if anything. They think it may have thrown a shim on the exhaust side and if thats the case shouldnt cost more than a few £ + the normal service charge

Daston
wooo it wasnt the engine! Aparently that is running sweet turns out the pasanger air vent pipe was vibrating badly cause all sorts of knocking noises for under the dash and towards the back of the engine. Cost £423 and this included 4 hours for them to sort out my passanger window. So all in all much better than expected
