Gaz Walker
Hi guys, Just got this pretty authentic looking email through to my mail account just now. First time I've seen/heard of this one. I looked into the source as I thought it was too good to be true and its dodgy. Lets not fall for this one Copy of email attached. Best Regards, Gaz. Gaz Walker
Ooh, only for self employed peoples though I guess? Where does the link go? Site that looks authentic? Well I got it, then everyone else at Envy got it so its obviously getting the emails from a list or fished them of our website. I didn't click the link. I'd assume it looks the real. Gaz. MrRalphMan
I haven't got one of these yet, warning bells would ring about the 48hours, the tax office are not known to rush things at all.
RiceRocket
Isn't the term actually 'Tax Rebate' and it would come in the post in one of those lovely brown envelopes
Ark
The very idea of HMRC coming to you saying they owe you. Pssh!
Ian C
C'mon Attention is spelt wrong Lengthen is spelt wrong "Usually does not take" is poor grammar and wouldn't ever be in an official message like this, as is the bit about "permanent National Insurance Number". 48 hours a ludicrously short time to respond especially in a governmental organisation, usually 28 days minimum. etc etc. It's OK, but I've seen better. Spelling and grammar is the number one telltale that an official looking email isn't kosher. So one in the eye for all the "if i no wat it meens then who cares like innit" people. Enjoy your plate of scam -Ian

extendor
I know someone who works at HMRC and she reckons everyone should automatically check every year if they are due a refund. She told my mate Paul to check and he got £400. The issue seems to be that YOU need to ask. Just get on the phone and give them your NI No. or Unique Tax Code (or whatever it is) and go from there. I think she said if you dont claim it they code it in or something so you dont see the benefit as it is absorbed over the year in your allowances. They've always been OK with me, unless my accountants are chasing on my behalf? I paid my corporation tax a month or so early this year, and they sent me a cheque for the interest that they'd accumulated in that month!
extendor
Sorry - just checked. If they owe you they dont code it in they send it you. If you ring them they will check your record there and then and if you are owed they send you a cheque. Apparently the IR never send emails - very very few of the mainstream staff have outbound email capability. It is all done by writing.

AndyT
Cheers Gaz. I deal with the Tax man so I'd know, but as you say, not everyone does and it deserves the head's up.

Scoboblio
I got a nice refund of about £30 this year, as has already been said I think they only audit it all at the end of the tax year (5th April). Anything outside this time is probably a scam. In case you're stupid enough to think that they'll EMAIL you information like this, that's another thing to help you spot it's a scam. ivan
We should all be getting a refund after next month (well, all PAYE people that is). As of then they're raising the personal allowance - 6 months retrospectively.
