Digital SLR lens

I have the Nikon D40X. After my trip to the Hungarian Grand Prix, I want a new lens. I currently have a manual focus 300mm lens, but loss focus on a lot of the pictures.

Looking at the sigma lenses and they seem rather nice. Looking at either 300 - 500mm lens.

Any suggestions comments, etc?

Also can anyone recommend a decent wide angle lens?

See here for some good reviews for lenses: http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/overview

I have the sigma 10-22mm wide angle lens and it is good, it isn't the sharpest lens in the world but that isn't its job. it is great for landscape photos (which is why i bought it) and also for architecture.

Whats your budget for the long lens ?

Are you shooting hand held or do you have a bi/tripod ?

If you were using a narrow apperture, (F11 and above) your focus really shouldn't have been out as the depth of field should have been pretty large.

Was it down to the lens or were you using a fast shutter speed and then compensating for this by opening up the apperture to get the exposure right? This would have dropped your depth of field right down and meant that your focussing would need to have been really accurate.

I know fast speeds are great for stopping action, but if you pan carefully, you can get away with 1/100th of a second and still stop the movement in the subject completely whilst having a nice movement-blurred background. If you stop everything, the car just looks like it's stationary.

Sigma are very good by the way!

(Hope I'm not teaching you to suck eggs here...)

Will have a read of some of the reviews! Thanks!

Thats what I want the wide angle for, tired of trying to photoshop pics together :D

Thinking around £500 for the long lens. I have numerous tripods, one I use for a spoting scope, but I am think about a monopod when I get the big lense...

99% sure it was the lens. Some of the better pics can be found here:

Was a quick fix to for a short period of time. Just never got around to getting a better one.

Off topic  , but speaking of sucking eggs. I've googled this and discussed with people before (and nobody agrees), but surely "sucking eggs" is a euphemism for sucking titties? It can't just be me who thinks that makes sense? Babies don't need to be taught to suck titties do they, hence the term "to suck eggs"?

Surely I'm onto something ? :)
