michael
Mrs just got one, what's wrong with the OS? The underlying mobile 6.1 software is OK, as is the Samsung Touch Wiz UI stuff they have wrapped around it, my only worry is that you drop from the Wiz UI into 6.1 with certain bits and the buttons can be really tiny, I don't want to have to grow a pointy fingernail or carry a stylus all the time. My XDA was the same, some apps were very user friendly on a touch screen but others were a bit annoying. I need to play with one really but none of the shops I've tried so far have a live demo version, just fake chunks of plastic with bolts through them. The big issue people seem to have is that the touch screen is unresponsive compared with the iPhone, something else I'd like to try out for myself. I need to find out if video recording is limited on the Omnia too, it's a rubbish 15fps compared with 30fps on the Nokias but some of the other phones limit you to 12 second clips too, Nokia don't - seems silly when you can get an Omnia with 16gb built in. Samsung often limit the number of text messages you can keep too, something like 128mb worth, seems silly with all that storage available. Does anyone know of an app like the Nokia Sportracker for Mobile v6.1?
Thorin
Well I just had a Nokia N85... for all of about 15 minutes. Wandered past Phones4U and noticed they had some in, so went in to ask. Yes they had them, yes I could do an upgrade through them. Great. Spent 15 minutes giving my details etc. while playing around with the new phone, the guy phones up O2 to confirm the upgrade blah blah. Goes to put the phone through the till... "oh sorry this is down as a Sim-free one, I can't sell it on a contract, looks like we don't have any for sale on O2". Balls. So he rings up another store to ask if they did, yes they did, so shop lackey runs over to the other store and comes back 10 minutes later... Their's was also a "sim-free" one. Double balls. So now O2 think that the upgrade has happened because the guy rang them for the confirmation before finding all this out, and I have to wait until he's e-mailed his head office to cancel it. What's betting that this doesn't happen and I have loads of grief when I try to upgrade again?
michael
That's typical, I went into the city at the weekend to look at phones and nobody even knew what an N85 was, I find it hard to understand why people who work in such a dedicated retail environment don't brush up on these things. Anyway... I got an Omnia.

AndrewOW
I got an Omnia. They certainly look snazzy, but are they as good as they look?
michael
They certainly look snazzy, but are they as good as they look? Probably not, Windows Mobile 6.1 and the Samsung gubbins wrapped around it is a bit clunky, 8 different ways of doing the same thing you don't really need to do and then only 1 difficult way of doing the things you do If you are willing to invest the time to add more software, hack the registry etc then it's a nice device but out of the box it's a little bit disappointing for anyone craving a super phone that's easy to use, still getting used to it and loading new things on though, I suspect it'll be pretty good once I've tailored it to my needs more. One thing I will add is that I'm really impressed with the IGO8 navigation software I've put on there, worth a look for anyone looking for mobile mapping. http://www.navngo.com/pages/global/eng/igo_8_description Nokia seem to have nailed the whole user interface thing and make phones far too easy to use, it's a bit of a culture shock to go back to something that doesn't automatically presume you are a bit dim
tbourner
How easy is it to add stuff to the phone then? I'm an idiot with phones but would like to get Zoe sorted with hers. That site only shows IGO8 in Europe and the US and stuff not in UK - does that mean there's no maps? How much is it? Do you just plug the memory card in? I'm so confused!!! You just copy the .cab files for the chosen apps to the storage card that's built into the phone or one you've put into the slot and then navigate to it, run it and away it goes. Or most apps come with a .exe that you can install via Activesync from a PC that's hooked up to the phone. And IGO8 has UK maps because we are in Europe I believe you can download a "trial" for free if you look on the usual torrent sites but obviously my advice is to purchase a copy.
