SupraAyf Posted August 1, 2008 Share Posted August 1, 2008 Some background, 16 Air Assault Brigade during its last tour of Afghanistan sent back over 100 seriously injured casualties to the UK. Selly Oak hospital (Birmingham) unfortunately could not accommodate all of the casualties in the “dedicated” Military Unit. Despite best efforts of the Medical staff, the hospital could not cope with the influx of troops and some guys were therefore sent back to their local home hospitals to recover, relying on NHS visiting services which in themselves are over committed. The petition would benefit from as many names as possible and quite cynically, the one month time limit which has been imposed is far from satisfactory to obtain a sizeable petition. One dedicated hospital in the UK is not much to ask, especially when you consider how much these guys/girls put on the line themselves. I'm reading General Mike Jackson's autobiography at the moment, and he discusses this issue briefly. To paraphrase him, although the NHS do sterling work for wounded service personnel, the psychological advantage of being in a military hospital, being treated by military medical staff, and being surrounded by others who have served should not be underestimated. Unfortunately i have spent time in the Queen Elizabeth in Birmingham due to injuries sustained whilst serving in Iraq in 2004. I could not go to selly oak as there was not enough room for me, whilst in there i was subjected to verbal abuse by the staff that worked there, which i found to be very unpleasant, so a dedicated hospital where the staff are vetted would be great for our lads and lasses. richie Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Sickens me to see how the government treat (by near total apathy) the men and women of our armed forces who they have thrown into the breech for whatever reason is deemed politically appropriate (I guess you are contractually obliged when serving ones country) leaving the guys and girls of the armed forces who all do their job heroically/admirably when they get an injury (or even when they return physically unscathed but with mental issues) to get a thanks but "we have no money to fix you" slap in the face level of appreciation. I see the people doing the fighting doing their job, I see the people paying as much tax as humanly possible for a country to try and support these campaigns and the normal running of life... I am not seeing the correct outcome.. no balanced equation. WTF are they doing with the money? The people of the armed forces that I have known don't even do it for the money (if they were in it for that they wouldn't have bothered as something else would have called) - they do it for higher/personal/selfless/altruistic reasons - shame the effing government doesn't do things in such an altruistic/self sacrificing way!!!
