allawyg
Hi I have a 6 speed manual gearbox I have a quick shift gear stick thats made of metal (I think aliminium) the temperature thats comes up from the gearbox is immense. especially on motorway driving. the gear stick heats up stupidly and the bottom half of it is too hot to handle. is this normal? allawyg
is there a way to lower the heat... is this heat a sign that I need to change the gearbox oil? how do I know if thats the case.
Homer
The shifter should not be getting hot at all. Have you had the gearbox oil level checked recently? Has the fluid been changed in the last 3 years? Is the shifter seal still in place? If it missing you will get a LOT of heat and noise coming up through from the trans tunnel
uk-rich
mine gets warm too, i have a quick shift, which is aluminium, and its a very good conducter of heat it gets no where near too hot to touch though

A picture would be if possible. It's not a good sign though. The gearbox oil needs to be checked with the car up in the air and level. If you remove the filler bolt on the side the oil should be level with the lower end of the hole (i.e. so you cannot pour more in)

ADL Mark
The exhaust also runs right next to where the shifter is, this is much more likely the cause of the heat than the gearbox which is a bit further forward in the car.

That does make a whole lot of sense. and cos I got some aftermarket exhaust system that explains the abnormal amount of heat. :) genius
ADL Mark
You should still have the plate and gaiter round the base of the shifter though, it's there to stop heat and water/debris coming up through, it also supresses the noise quite well, as does the actual dash panel.
