trooper
I had a disaster yesterday with the laptop. I opted to download the vista sp1 package and then my laptop wouldn't boot. I got a screen that gives you two options. 1. start in some kind of diagnstics mode result: Nothing 2. start windows normally Result: PC switches off Has anyone else had this calamity? UltraFlynn
I upgraded my desktop PC with SP1 about a month ago and it worked ok. I know that's not alot of help but at least it shows it can work. Can you boot from a repair disk and remove the upgrade?
trooper
Yeah, I used the recovery disc but of course that blitzes everything. At least the PC works now but I've yet to assess how much data I've lost in the process.

charlton
I tried to install Vista SP1 from disc the other day, it showed up as having no boot files/sector.... Could be a hardware issue
ClaireRZ-S
You need to await for SP1 to come available on automatic download rather than download manually because you will have problems otherwise. Can you get into windows through safe mode?
Scott
@Claire - It is on automatic update, has been since May. I reformatted my laptop the other day, it asked me today to do the update so i will let you know how i get on with mine tonight. I have had trouble in the past with service pack updates, the best thing to do is get a copy of vista, put it in and boot from it, go into recovery and try restoring to a previous date. When i get my computer running the way i want it i always do a backup, system restore is the next best thing so i would give that a go. Think u need a vista disc though so hope u have one. trooper
yes, it was an automatic update but I guess something went wrong. My laptop came with the Vista disc so it's all working again now. I've just lost the files that I didn't back up (lesson learnt) No real harm done, just a pain in the a** LOL

keener
Since I got Vista on my new pc's everyone I've spoken to (and that's a lot as I've had so many issues with it ) says turn the automatic updates off. Basically Microsoft seemed to be releasing updates before they worked correctly (and I had tried to install a few of these and had problems) and then recalling them (or releasing an update to fix the update) when they realised they were problematic by which time the auto update had done it's work and buggered people up. I was advised to only download updates after they had been available for a week or so so any bugs could be found by others (). I was also told when Microsoft released updates so I could time my manual update correctly. Can't remember this atm but I'll try to find it out. UltraFlynn
Of the many automatic updates which MS have sent to my Vista PC, two have destroyed it. I've had to manually back out those changes to get it working again.
Scott
Mine was fine, fingers crossed. Just installed it last night and finished the update this morning.
