SteveR
I'm stil at the Nurburgring. AFR issues sussed, car is driveable once more. Except it's not. Maybe. I've got a massive clunk/crunch noise when turning BUT ONLY WHEN: moving forward/backward slowly and turning the steering wheel (e.g. into a parking space) at speed and when pushing the handling (e.g. when lapping) However it doesn't seem to happen if I turn the same direction twice, e.g. a left followed by a left (ad infinitum), it'll only clunk the first time. When I next turn in the opposite direction, clunk. Keep turning in that direction, no noises until I change direction again. Stationary, turbing the wheel from side to side (not too much as I don't want to fry the power steering) I only get a click occasionally, I seem to have to be moving slightly to get the CLUNK. Any ideas? Top suspects from here seem to be wishbone ball joints or engine mounts. We've been under the car and can't find any loose bolts/mountings/etc. I'm thinking I'll use the couple of laps I have left on my ticket, but not push it through the corners, and simply stop completely if it gets any worse. Bad idea?? TIA, as always. P.S. Everyone else having a great time! At least that's good.
Chris Wilson
Top wishbone through bolt not torqued up properly? Front subframe to chassis rail fasteners not torqued up fully? ARB links worn or nuts insecure on links? Could be alll sorts really.... I'd not be wanting to use a lap of the `Ring to find out though
Jake
Loose subframe bolts? Known problem on Supras. Wouldn't any suspension issues have been picked up when had the suspension worked over recently?
Mike
Check out this thread with a helpful post from Jake
foodfreak
Lower wishbone bolts, seems to happen frequently on the VVTI's for some reason. Just needs to be undone & re-torqued. I've had this twice:( john
Swampy442
Maybe steering rack bushes?
SteveR
Thanks for the input chaps, I'll follow it up in the next few weeks - the car carried on round the 'Ring for the last 3 or so laps I had left on my ticket and the noise got only slightly worse. It makes you cringe when you hear it at low speed though, if anything it's worse then. I meant to say in the OP, we had a look underneath and couldn't find ANYTHING loose. When sat in the driver seat it sounds as if the noise is coming from a little way immediately in front of the accelerator pedal, but I could easily be wrong. We didn't find anything wrong at the geo day, but to be fair I wasn't looking as I hadn't noticed anything then; in retrospect I think there has always been a slight clunk when reversing of my drive, I think I mentioned it to Burna at the first meet I took it too. Hmmmmmmmmmm........ If/when I discover what it is, I'll report back... Edited July 31, 2008 by SteveR (see edit history)
