DaveSupTT
I have an Apexi Air filter on my Supra, and as I am doing a bit of work on my car at the moment I have decided to give everything a good clean at the same time. Is there a way to clean the Air filter at all as mine is looking rather dirty! Dont really want to purchase a new one as not really got the cash to spare, so is there any way to clean these. Nic
Remove the filter and blow through it from inside with a high pressure airline.
Dan8
if realy dirty you can buy airfilter cleaner by k & n and pipercross where you spray it then rinse the filter through with a hose from in side of filter to dislodge particles then let filter dry near boiler then when dry fit make sure its air filter cleaner as other cleaners can ruin the filter efficency

michael
Go with what Nic said or hoover it from the outside while brushing it with a nail brush (or similar) - these filters are designed to be replaced when dirty rather than cleaned but you can extract a bit more life out of them if you are careful. DaveSupTT
Can you just replace the "filter" ie keep the outside casing? I have had a look and they seem to be just sold as a complete unit, which is £100plus. Ill have ago at what Nic said in the mean time. DamanC
Sorry, Apparently the entire kit is about £90 delivered. Either prices have changed or I am looking at the wrong supplier. However Replacements Filters (entire cone) are only USD 98.
DaveSupTT
ah right, cheers for that. If I was to replace my existing air filter, would you reccomend going for the same one, or are there alternative ones you would pick? To be honest, for now, I think ill just try give it a good clean and go from there.
DamanC
I would be going for the same one matey

Pixelfill
Dave, take it off at work, and ask Jack or Colin up in 23 building if they'll blow it through with the high pressure air line up there, you'll be surprised how much crap you'll get out. DaveSupTT
Ok guys, I have just done as Mike sugested above and blown through it with a high pressure air line. I was suprised at how much dirt came out, but what suprised me most is that the majority of it seemed to be greese/oil? To me, this was a bit of a worry, cos id of thought their would of been no oil at all. As its only sucking air in? Im thinking its running down the pipe but not sure where it will be initially coming from. Any ideas where it could be coming from, is this common, what could this mean? Hi ya Dave do you have an aftermarket dump valve as these have been known to let a bit of oil mist out on slightly older turbos and that would be sort of in the vicinity of your filter. Some one will prob correct me on this but i think it may just be a possibillity over a few thousand miles. Chris
DaveSupTT
yes I have a HKS one if I remember correctly, and it is blowing oil out of it as well. However, I wouldnt really say that the dump valve is that close to the air filter. chris burford
yes I have a HKS one if I remember correctly, and it is flowing oil out of it as well. However, I wouldnt really say that the dump valve is that close to the air filter. It wouldnt be flowing out when the valve vents it would be mist or slightly atomised its the only way i can think of oil getting into the filter in that location, its quite a powerfull suction as well on wide open throttle. However if everything is fine and you check your oil regularly and you dont lose much if any, then i wouldnt worry about it to much mate. DaveSupTT
Thats the thing, I do loose a fair amount of oil. I think maybe some seals have gone and also I suspect I may have a cracked piston head. (see my other threads for futher details on my nightmare lol). Dash Rendar
Was there any oil down the pipes, or was it just in the filter? As you may recall, the car used to leak a lot of oil when I first owned it, and that was resolved when I had the turbos replaced with hybrids. However, the Apexi filter had been on the car for about a year by the time the turbos were replaced, and I imagine quite a bit of oil would have built up in the filter by then. I regularly checked the induction pipes after going to hybrids, and never found a drop of oil in there. (There used to be loads of oil before the turbos were replaced.) So I suspect what you've blown out is the earlier build up. That's why I recommend checking the pipes to see if there's any fresh oil in there. DaveSupTT
Cheers Darren, yeah their was a small amount right at the top, of the pipe, but nothing major and no signs of it having run down into the air filter. But this explains it! Cheers
