I havn't seen this up here yet. If you are offended by violence then don't watch the video. It shocked me big time.

"It all started because that black lady cut in line and that dude was on the phone with his girl, and he said something like "its gonna take longer because someone just cut in line.

She went all crazy, spit on the manager, got in that dudes face, then her monster BF came in and almost killed that guy. "

mm I was just thinking that.

One of the directors at a client of mine teaches self-defence classes in the evenings. He's always saying I should come along and I'm seriously considering it.

He has videos on his computer of street fighting - yobs battering innocent lads outside pubs and stuff after drinking, and it's really quite scary how two or more people gang up. Quite alarming to see how the victim doesn't really know what to do - just covering head up and taking the beating. Girlfriend stepping back and watching :o

Situations in which people view violent acts and do nothing to help aren't anything new. A prime example is the Kitty Genovese case from 1964 in NYC. She was murdered in a horrifying attack lasting over half an hour. There were over thirty witnesses, iirc, but no one helped or even phoned the police. There was a similar case in the UK in the early 80s in which a girl was gang-raped and no on intervened.

It isn't just to do with personal safety, either. It's to do with the way people behave in groups. Quite often, there's 'diffusion of responsibility' - everyone is waiting for someone else to do something - so nobody does. All the research on this sort of thing indicates he would have been more likely to get help if there had been less people.

Taking your cue from what others do is really common in public situations. A few years back, there was a fire in a department store in which a number of people in the restaurant died - they were all waiting patiently to pay their bills despite the alarms.

And although most people (including me) think they would definitely do something, people are notoriously bad at being able to predict their own behaviour.
