RedM
I'm hearing that it's a return to the Metallica of old. Two 8 minute plus songs, time changes aplenty. It seems like they've reverted to the old 'riff tapes' method too. I can't wait to hear it. I'm hoping for something that contains the best parts of MoP and AJFA. michael
Hopefully Robert Trujillo and Kirk Hamnett will be able to influence the sound a bit more this time around, I keep buying the albums just to keep the set going but I'm going to sample this one before I part with any cash, St Anger was enough to put me off anything new from them. RedM
Been digging and Trujillo has been involved pretty heavily (incl singing) but Kirk was less involved due to his wife's pregnancy. I've found a snippet that includes *GASP* a friggin Hammett solo.
michael
I was watching a few clips on Youtube a month or so ago and it seemed like they were taking more notice of Rob which is a good thing, I just had another look and found this one which has a bit of a nice sound to it: ZrGPWYUlZpc This is the one I saw a while ago: ktjlVvMYlA Edit: It doesn't embed properly for me - if the same applies for you. Thorin
I'd given up all hope on Metallica that I wasn't even aware there was a new album on the way. It presumably has to be better than St Anger... but I'm still not hopeful of a return to form. I might have to dig out my live CD's from the Nowhere else to roam tour now though

That acoustic clip had me smiling like a loon. I'm getting good vibes. Some of Hatfields throwaway licks were old school 'Tallica. Kirk even has long hair again. RedM
The Black album was the beginning of the end of my interest in Metallica. I'd been into them since Kill 'Em All and, for me, they reached a peak with ...And Justice. Load, Re/Load and St.Inker did nothing for me. I know people will argue that bands change but they should always change for the better. Fugazi, my fave band of all time, sound very different on their last album than their first but in a good way. Each album being a honing of a sound that is uniquely theirs but also allowing for experimentation and prgression. IMO Metallica didn't do that. What they were doing around the time of ...And justice was pretty unique. Sure, there were sound-a-likes but then 'Tallica seemed to feel that they'd be better trying to incorporate indie-rock and nu-metal elements. It didn't work artistically although the financial rewards seem obvious. I used to really love Metallica even though they were so far removed from my punky/hardcore musical upbringing. I really hope this is a return to form for them. Although, if nothing else, the inevitable 'making of' DVD looks like it'll be worth a watch. spidermonkey
and justice for all was the best all round album imo
Thorin
Although, if nothing else, the inevitable 'making of' DVD looks like it'll be worth a watch. Yup. Some kind of monster was very interesting viewing, I still can't believe how bitter Dave Mustain was after all those years... Wouldn't have had you down as a big fan either. RedM
Wouldn't have had you down as a big fan either. Closet case! I've got all sorts of Metallica oldies, all the singles and 12"s, the videos, the Live Sh*t Binge and Purge set etc etc. In fact, for a band so different from my usual tastes I've spent an inordinately huge sum of money on them! I must dig some of it out.
Metallikev
It will be interesting to see how Rick Rubin changes the sound from what Bob Rock produced, especially since Rob Trujillo will be more involved, and lets hope for some Guitar Solo's this time!. Think my fave album would have to be 'Ride the Lightning' though, love the sound and the guitars in that album. Definatly looking forward to 'Death Magnetic' though!, from hearing some clips it sounds promising!
michael
I still can't believe how bitter Dave Mustaine was after all those years.... I think it's more the way things were done more than anything, Megadeth went on to be better anyway http://www.askdavemustaine.com/
Thorin
I think it's more the way things were done more than anything, Megadeth went on to be better anyway http://www.askdavemustaine.com/ They certainly spent more time being better yeah, but IMO their later stuff declined too. MarkR
I've loved them since kill em all. My favourite band ever. St Anger was very dissappointing. I entered a competition on the net a few weeks ago where they were offering a pre-order of the new album, and a chance to win a Metallica guitar On an aside, I'm wearing my Master of Puppets t-shirt to Alice Cooper tonight.
