Cam/timing Belt change - Have you checked ?

I know that the Cam belt should be changed every 63k miles but, did not know it had a time limit too.

I got a letter from Mr T saying 63k miles / or 60 months.

There is no reference to the time limit in my UK service book so, thought I'd post it up.

I guess there are a few j-spec owners who have not reached the 63k mile but, have passed the 60 months limit and maybe coming up to the 120 months ?

I'm sure everyone has them checked when they come into the country but, you never know :)

Thanks mate..

Looking at it. Is it a case of just sliding the old belt off and lining up the timing marks etc and sliding on the new belt?

I would also like to replace any bits ie pulleys from stock to light weight performance ones.. Is this possible also?

Anyone know if lightened pulleys etc will give me any more performance etc?

When you have the timing cover off its simple enough to change the belt allthough there is a knack to getting it lined up exactly right with the slack in the correct place , check the idler wheel as well as the bearing can wear out .

If you get it wrong however the TT is a NON INTERFERANCE engine so you wont do any damage , ive even tested mine with HKS cams and it doesnt touch , you can turn it over by hand with the cams in any position and no belt and it wont contact !!!!!

The lighter pulleys are nice looking and definatly wont hurt performance but there are other things that will make more difference than those , these would be done when you really are 'scratching' for that last HP !!!!

how much does a new bearing for the idler pulley cost and have you got a part number? i've got a bit of a noise coming from that area now so i 'm going to get on and do the cam belt as soon as i get chance. i take it i can just get the bearing pressed in/out?

cheers ....lee

Actually since its a non-interference engine you can't physically damage any parts if you time it up wrong. But you will kick yourself if you get it all back together and then find out you cocked the timing up! :thimbs:

Hoping it can be put right then by re-doing the belt to get the timing back to what it was?

The ECU does not try and re-adjust to the wrong installation does it?

Dude fellar, what is the idle wheel? Thought most things running off the crank are the water pump etc etc..

Wondering which one you are refering to and whether you can just check the bearing by checking for play in it?

just above the crank pulley, towards the left side. I small shiny idler wheel, its tensioned by the spring tensioner bolted underneath it.

I suppose so .. just a difference of lingo.

But when talking about these motors its normally the tensioner is reffered to as the spring loaded unit, that keeps the idler pulley in place.

Markie and LEETT you can test the idler/tensioner wheel only by spinning it with it in your hand , its not expensive (under £30 i think) dont forget a strange noise could also be the idler/tensioner wheel for the drive belt , these are going more and more , so much so that i keep a bearing in stock all the time , they are about £8 !!!! :complain:
