marbleapple
Go for a golf GTI MK1... they are quite retro now and parts are cheap as chips. I.e. they often put the MK2 engines in to give it a little more power.

Scott
Not being funny but i would go with a vectra or a mondeo. Oil burner if you can, they seem to last a bit better.
Chris and Alana
I have also been looking into runabouts for alana for work ect and decided that a vectra (after some reading) has random timing belt failure and a mondeo is on the large side. After more searching I also decided that a escort fitted the bill. Good size motor (not too big or small) and a 1.4-1.6 engine should get decent fuel return, bits should be cheap too as well as insurance. They can be had for well under a grand with 40-50k miles in pretty good nick.
JustGav
Renault Laguna... cheap, cheerful and almost disposable.. I've picked up two so far for Mel and they were both under £500 and good little cars.

123tom123tom
:)I have got a 206 hdi 2.0ltr turbo diesal 2000/2001 plate, it has some rear quarter panel damage but it is the top spec model, it is just cosmetic damage, my partner has had it 6 month now with no proplems, but you know what women are like and she wants some thing cute.... Bargin at £1000 Had a quote for the rear panel to be fixed at 300-350.
