The Raven
Ok as some of you know i was due to start my new job at an airport on monday. Today i get a letter saying, "i am sorry to inform you that due to a business restructure of the organisation we will withdrawing our offer" Now these people have not had the guts and or morals to bother to ring me and tell me this worse still they let me pay for my own vetting and even worse let me quit my old job last week. I have signed a offer of employment from them. Not sure if i have a claim? but they cant take an offer back that i have agreed? Have i been sacked before i set foot in there? OOO paying those bills isnt going to be fun this month.:(:(
mwilkinson
Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately I know nothing about employment law but it is poor for them to have done it in such a spineless manner!!
The Raven
Sorry to hear this. Unfortunately I know nothing about employment law but it is poor for them to have done it in such a spineless manner!! Indeed, worse still the HR Co-ordinator has gone on hoilday this week....so her last act was to post my letter.............i am trying very hard not to wish ill on them all. I went down there and refused to leave until someone saw me. I have a meeting with the CO of the airport tomorrow. I will be sure to tell him what his company has done to my family and home life. I mean why let me quit my old job? they must have had an idea this was going to happen. Sorry to rant on and on but im so upset i fear i may break things. JustGav
Even if they took you on, they could make you redundant within a week and you wouldn't be much better off sadly...
Alex
Have you quit quit or just handed in your resignation and are working your notice period? If it's the latter I'd be trying to reverse that asap!
JustGav
Out of interest would this be at an airport near AFR tuning?
mwilkinson
Well at least someone is willing to see you. At the very least I would want to know why you were told 1 week before starting, BY POST, that you don't have a job to start. Why could they just not ring!! Any other opportunities going at the airport which you could look to take, especially as you have paid for the vetting?

Havard
I'll have a word with Mrs H. I am not sure if you have any comeback as for the first 3 months you are on probation anyway. Sounds like they are a disorganised bunch so it's probably better that you didn't start....... H.

hoff
That is really bad mate. Feel for you:(. No chance of getting the old job back? Though, I would understand if you wouldn't fancy it. It wouldn't be nice going back and having to explain.
ShamelessTT
That is disgusting mate really feel for you, eating humble pie (esp through no fault of ur own) and asking for your old job back is difficult but it maybe ur best plan of action.
Mrs H
Was the offer subject to any conditions i.e. satisfactory references? You can retract offers of employment for business reasons, say if you were recruiting due to to a pending large order which didn't transpire, or the company got notice of a contract cancellation, but to say that the offer is due to restructure/re-organisation at the 11th hour seems questionable. I would put your questions to them in writing i.e. what was the nature of the restructure, how did it impact on your offer/position are there any other potential new starters who have also had their offers retracted. It wouldn't be nice going back and having to explain. Already phoned the old job back, someone else has stepped in to do the jobs i was doing. They (airport) have rung me up and wish to see me at 16.30 tomorrow night. Time to make my point and ask for all my personal data back. Being a security job they have untold amounts of my personal info. Then home to fire off an email the gutless spinless munkfish that couldnt be bothered to ring me and tell me in person. Vicki x Thanks Mrs H I will do just that as and when i chill out , been though the "il kill them all stage" and then the "what the hell am i going to do" stage Yes the offer was based on getting satisfactory references, but they havent even mentioned them. The reason i was given in the letter was the one above.

Darren-K
The Raven In all honesty,i know this is easy for me to say but calm down when dealing with the airport - dont fire of any emails (yet) go there with cap in hand, right now i would be very keen for them to change there mind on the decision they made,. giving there staff abuse wont help matters, after all you need a job - dont scupper the one chance you might have left. Vicki x I've just given my old dear about this, she's an ex Head of HR, and she agrees with the above, what she's also said is that whilst she doesn't know exactly if you're entitled to it, as they've offered you a position, and you've accepted it, the least they can do is to pay you your notice period... It's certainly worth a go...

Ya i have chilled quite a bit since this morning, i was more annoyed when they wouldnt answer my calls as they didnt want to deal with me. In the end i had no choice but to go down there. I know the score, and had i been working there i would have done the same thing, only thing is i wouldnt have let me in:D Standard thing wait till he chills out then talk to him. Reading between the lines i think they are going broke and or selling up. The person i spoke to was the security manager and had no idea that i wasnt joining. Im taking the Mrs with me tomorrow as she makes me much more chilled. I was told and quote to "sit tight" by the last person i spoke too. Mean time its back to looking for work, seeing as i live in Thanet and now have no job. Where do i pick my free can of beer, staff puppy, and cap? Edit seems they are still taking people on for different roles http://www.kentinternationalairport-manston.com/CommercialOpp/Employment.html
