David Reid
Does anyone know of a source for a bolt in EDC / BDC spec roll cages to fit the Mkiv? It would need to have 45mm main hoop, with the rest in 42*2 or 38*2.5, 6 point with door bars, non dash dodging. Same spec as time attack Cusco ect would not be legal So far I have contacted all of the roll cage manufacturers I know (including fabricage who sponcer BDC) I know and they are saying weld in only at a cost of 1k + vat as I would be the 1st car they have done? Does anyone know where I can buy a cheaper bolt in cage to suit the regs? Or does anyone else want one and I can see if they can make it cheap for 2? bolarbag
Why would you want a bolt in anyway, especially for competition? The welded in cages offer enhanced chassis stiffness and its better in terms of safety In any case, the people that are fabricating one up for you should be able to offer you a bolt in cage at the chassis mounts, that way if you dont like it, you can just cut it up on removal leaving no weld marks on the chassis e.t.c
David Reid
The main reason is cost, for example a 6 point cage for a 200sx cost £550, weld in same as I am finding for the supra cage approx £1200. You are right the weld in one would be better (bolt in cages still stiffen the shell though), but if I can find a cheaper bolt in cage I will go for that as having a weld in cage isn't going to be the difference between winning and losing. bolarbag
Isn't drifting all about suspension setup? It depends how serious you are about competing, but the difference in terms of chassis enhancement from a bolt in to a weld in is quite significant I dont recall ever seeing a bolt in without dog legs for the supra, could try pm'ing Nic on here, he may know a jap company who has one
David Reid
Not really no. In my opinion is more to do with the amount of lock you have and the amount of power. Both things that I will be spending the saved money on. Look at the current EDC championship leader Bon Bon, bolt in cage. 2007 champ Brett Castle Bolt in cage, 2006 Champ Phill Morrison bolt incage. None of the runners who have weldin cages seem to have any advantage on track. I hope to run in BDC next year so fairly serious, but as I said IMO I dont think it is worth the extra money that could be better spent elsewhere.
