allawyg
hi guys, I have this weird problem after ive been driving a while. maybe 15-20 mins (normal driving) on idle I start to hear this loud ringing/metallic clattering noise from what seems to be the gearbox, or something connected to the gearbox. it only comes after ive been driving and it comes and goes. but its worrying me also my gear shift lever is exposed and I get some crazy heat commin out the gear, I dunno if thats normal or not HELP!! allawyg
oh I got a 6 speed manual gearbox. its a 1993 j.spec turbo
gaz1
first thing have you checked or replaced the gearbox oil lately sounds like a clutch problem
Multics
If the noise goes away when you press the clutch pedal then it's most likely the clutch thrust bearing.
edge
I would remove an inspection plate on the box and check to see if you have an aftermarket clutch/flywheel. Mine is and rattles like mad but is normal for the make of flywheel.
allawyg
it doesnt go away when I press the clutch. I got a triple plate clutch so that makes its own noise when I press it. this noise comes only after i been driving for a while, u can feel it and hear it the most when the car is idling, in gear or out is the same. Homer
If it has a lightened flywheel then that’s perfectly normal for the gears to rattle like hell when in neutral at lower rpm once everything is up to temp. Was this an import from Japan without a clutch and flywheel change? For some reason the Japs love horrible snatchy clutches and noisy lightweight flywheels Does it still rattle while the clutch is engaged and it's in neutral? Do you know exactly which clutch and flywheel has been fitted?
sdavies
it doesnt go away when I press the clutch. I got a triple plate clutch so that makes its own noise when I press it. this noise comes only after i been driving for a while, u can feel it and hear it the most when the car is idling, in gear or out is the same. That seems to rule out the gearbox. Edit: Not being funny... catalytic converter heat shield? (tinny rattle vibration?) Luxluc
I have a RPS max street clutch with RPS lightened flywheel. I have the same symptons you describe ... that's normal. When starting the engine on cold, no noise is heard. But after some mls of driving the car under heavy load, the noise you describe, which is the flywheel (lightened), is heard each time the revs drop below 2500 rpm and that I accelerate then. Ian C
And yes, the heat from the gearbox is immense Cooks my CD player haha, after an hour or so of driving, it stops playing. If I eject the CD it's almost too hot to touch. -Ian
ADL Mark
It's just the gearbox rattling because of the lightened clutch, perfectly normal
allawyg
wow thanks guys. that really helped me out. I was getting worried. jus another small question, whats the benifit of a light flywheel and how can I be sure that I have one without opening up all internals
allawyg
so the flywheel has a mechanical popping/rattling noise under 2500 rpm... man supras r noisy. I already get soo much noise from the triple plate clutch I have. :) all good.
ADL Mark
It's not the flywheel rattling, it's the gearbox. The standard Supra clutch is damped so as to stop vibration and noise. Lightened flywheels do without this damping, therefore a lot of vibration goes through the gearbox and causes the very loud and worrying rattling noise. The benefit of a lightened flywheel is less rotational mass and less weight. Less rotational mass in theory means that the engine will rev easier, you will also find that it will stall easier as there is less enertia keeping the revs up. Tricky-Ricky
wow thanks guys. that really helped me out. I was getting worried. jus another small question, whats the benifit of a light flywheel and how can I be sure that I have one without opening up all internals There are two inspection plates on the bell housing, just remove one and take a look, you should be able to distinguish std from lightweight. I am so glad I read this I have just rebuilt my engine and fitted a Triple plate clutch at the same time and was quite worried about the noises now coming from gearbox. I was sure it did not sound like that before, now I know why
