Is it too many miles

Hi all,

I'm looking for a cheap but comfy barge to go to-and-from work, that way I can keep the Supe pristine and free from bastid stonechips :swear:

There's an old 1990 BMW 525i near me, leather seats, electric everything, long MOT etc, thing is it's got 180k on it. It's cheap as chips at only £800, so if it died on it's arse in 6 months then it's no real biggie, but I'd rather it didn't.

Is 180k just too risky for a petrol engine ?

Cheers

Matt

That'll be an inline 6. They're very strong motors and provided the oil has been changed regularly they can do 300k plus with ease.

My old '87 325i sport had the same engine, that did 180k and was still going strong when I sold it.

Only thing to check really is the exhaust manifold is not cracked (they're very expensive to replace), the shocks are in reasonable shape (also expensive to replace) and that the electrics aren't playing up.

not sure on the 525 but the 520's are prone to cracked heads. ive had two now and both times had a crack 10" long through the bottom of the head. one of them had over 200k miles on it though and the engine was still sweet as a nut. a nice bargain car. have a look around as £800 is about the going price these days for that sort of year

for all spares German and swedish are your friend. i found the bmw cheaper for spares than any vauxhall or ford.

Well, I did get one - so now my shiney, low mileage Supe can stay all polished up and live in the garage, only to be used when the sun is shining and the weather is good. (Or one of those frequent days where the missus says 'what car you taking' and this big childish grin breaks out all over my face - THAT is a Supra day ;) )

I opted for a few less miles and bought one from a local BMW specialist. A 1994 525i SE Touring in Orient Blue with Silver leather, apparently a VANOS engine and seemed to be in cracking condition.

So I'm now looking forward to owning the road, sitting in the outside lane, cutting people up, calling my car a 'BM' (cos THREE initials is just too many :D ) and thinking I have the bestest car ever :p
