Pay as you go lanes

I've got one thing to say about that: M6 toll road. Nobody uses it.

Exactly - and how much fun is there to be had as a consequence? :D

They used to have a similar thing in Moscow back in the day... lanes for diplomats and gentry. That was during communism though so slightly different. Slightly.

If it was £5 per tank-full, or £5 per week, then maybe (if it covered the part of the M3 I use every day, but it doesn't) but they are talking about £5 per use - an extra ten quid a day for me would almost double my travel costs - not worth it really.

Plus it'll be a big vote loser for Labour - creating a "better than thou" lane for rich people? yeah that'll go down well with poor people who vote labour.

You say that like it's a bad thing? :p

I agree - anything that gets rids of those tossers bit quicker!

I also quite like the idea of having a 'fast' lane I can access.

But I can't see the labour spin machine doing something politically unsound like this...unlike the politically unsound things like having an unelected leader, taxing the country into a hole, or blahblahblah... :taped:

What a crock. Pay as you drive one way or another it seems.

You already pay road tax so why should you have to pay to use a hard shoulder, which in itself is ridlicious idea.

I don't even know why I'm getting upset, I have no intention of coming back anyway !

I'd happily pay a few extra quid to use an open motorway.

It's great eh? Clocked some serious speed along that one early morning. At the pay booth the GPS showed 150mph average :D

I'd rather they put this much effort into solving the cause of the jams. I could solve the jams approaching j4 of the M40 in each direction at a stroke- a 3rd lane under the junction. They built that junction in 1969 and ever since they have tried to improve traffic flow without attempting the easiers, cheapest most obvious solution.

The toll roads are empty now, but they won't be when they're all toll roads. Just take a look at Japan.

To get to Mine's I have to pay 3quid to get out of Yokohama, then 5 quid to get down to the main junction, then 1.50 to use a small single lane road that goes up to the town they're just outside of.

Round trip 19quid + petrol.

It always starts off as "well I don't mind paying a bit if I can beat the queue" then the government pounce on that and before you know it you're being charged to drive everywhere.

I use public transport for getting about 99% of the time.

It's faultless.

Very good point however do they have road tax in japan? Now I don't mind the govenment doing this if they were to get rid of road tax that way the more you use your car the more tax you pay. This way it gets away from the whole "oh you have a gas guzzler I am going to rape you on tax even though you only use it once in a blue moon".

Sounds ok in general but I do not like the Hard Shoulder idea, the Hard Shoulder is meant for Emergencies and as such should be kept as that only.

Already done Hon. M42 uses hard shoulder to filter traffic to the next junction. Seriously cr*p road surface too. :(

Yep yet another tax, and an incredibly stupid idea if they do plan on using the hard shoulder. I await the law suit when someone is killed when they break down on the hard shoulder and someone crashes into them.

I notice someone has added the tag "will never happen", I wouldn't be too sure on that.
