JustGav
Bloody 'ell. I've had a 3.5 Bullett since they first came out about 5 years ago I guess. That can be fun when the wind picks up, but is absolutely nothing compared to the 5m+ jobs. The problem I found with a kite of the size I've got is that because it's fairly gusty, or no wind at all here, you're either flogging a dead horse or constantly having your arms pulled off followed by a lull, then back to having your arms pulled off. I did think about getting something much bigger for the calmer days but couldn't justify the cost. Bloody good fun though To be honest, anything bigger than 4m, you really need a harness.. I flew the 5m the other day purely on the bar and it was yanking me into the air... with harness at least still have control over it. redtwinturbo
Nice option.... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hq-Beamer-3-6-Metre-Power-Kite_W0QQitemZ260260827483QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item260260827483&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318 I've got a 3.6 Beamer, great fun. Can really tug when it wants to though, my friend has a 2.5 and the difference between them is big.

JustGav
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/7596528.stm Hmm, not good Base-jumper Hans Lange managed to avoid serious injury after jumping from the side of a mountain in Norway. He escaped with just a broken leg after his parachute failed to release properly, and he landed in a tree.
caseys
and what makes you think I'll have the time to see... I'm usually extracting myself from the ground or nearby tree So... when you coming down to try the 15 metre? :-) You can even borrow my harness. Maybe we could also use a ratchet strap to tie you down to something Maybe could get a few of us in the south together, a kiting/supra meet? SBDJ
Seen a lot of guys doing this round where I live now - lots of hills, and lots of wind at the moment. Looks like a lot of fun

Maybe we could also use a ratchet strap to tie you down to something Maybe could get a few of us in the south together, a kiting/supra meet? Had the big one out last night and promptly packed it away again. The 27mph wind was more than enough for the 5m one and even then we were getting 20ft airs... Don't worry about a harness I've got 2 , and yes strapping me down has been considered a few times...static parasailing I'm definitely up for a supra/kite meet up, Ben and I will head down anytime. Been looking at BASE jumping stuff last night and fancy doing that for a while as well.

JustGav
Is my kite not 'cool' anymore http://craftapple.files.wordpress.com/2007/08/kite-2.jpg hehehehe... Don't worry, Mel has got one like that as well which she almost prefers to the power kites. Although we are thinking of stick an LED lighting pack on it and 300m of line and just flying it above the house
TonyP
After a quick search I though this would probably be the best place to ask a question about kites. A few weeks ago I bought a 1.7 metre kite for my 12 year old daughter and I to mess about with. This one. Nothing special but it's great fun and easy to use. Well now she wants something bigger. She says she wants to fly! So I thought I won't go mad I'll get a 3 metre. So I bought this. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-3M-300CM-QUAD-4-CONTROL-LINE-POWER-STUNT-KITE-KIT_W0QQitemZ330358796959QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_Kites_Kitesurfing_CA?hash=item4ceaeb329f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 Very cheap I know but like I say It's just for a bit of fun. Took it out for the first time at the weekend. First time I'd used a 4 line kite, no instructions with it but seemed quite self explanatory. So, set it all up but when I tried to fly it it just wouldn't! I never flown a 4 line before but this was just uncontrollable. Most times it just flipped over to the left before even leaving the ground. I think I set it all up right. Is there anything you can think of that I might be doing wrong. Or do you think it's just a case of buy cheap, get crap? If so can you recommend a kite that'll give my daughter the "lift" she so craves. MaveriK
Threads like these should be banned from a club full of speed freaks and thrill seekers. Managed to avoid buying one of these a few months back and now you fools keep going on about them with their pretty colours and lift and aaaarghhhhhhh. Going to find a dark room and flog myself for a bit.
JustGav
Or do you think it's just a case of buy cheap, get crap? Sadly I'd reckon the above applies.... Double check all your lines to ensure they are tied right and not crossed over. Also check line lines to make sure they are even. HOWEVER the cheap kits aren't designed as well sadly. Also check you didn't have too much tension on the braking lines, as this would cause it fold up.

Can you recommend a kite that won't break the bank but is still pretty decent? And do you think a 3 m kite would lift her off the ground? She's about 9 stone. Btw that 16m jobbie you've got is pretty impressive. I'm amazed you're still around! Cheers Tony

Quite welcome to come to Christchurch and I'll show you how to set up a 4 liner kite on handles or a bar. Got a 5m Beemer and a 15m slingshot you can try too. Can show you some rudimentary safety bits etc too if you want chap. I can also check out your kite too dude, could be wired up wrong or have a bad tangle somewhere
caseys
Oh and a 5m 4 line in light wind may be good, consider though that I'm 15 stone and get air with it. A 3-4m Beemer may be good. Head down FC watersports in sandbanks or surface to air near The Cow by parkstone train station. Either can take you/daughter out for a half day and show you a choice of kites and a little lesson potentially too.

It would be good to know how to set the kite up properly as I was kind of guessing. Whereabouts do you go to fly yours. we've gone up Hengisbury head the last two weeks. Whereabouts do you go to fly yours. we've gone up Hengisbury head the last two weeks. no problem, we all start somewhere. I remember the fun of my first kitesurfing lessons in Poole bay! I normally go down baiter park in Poole actually, or into the new forest between lyndhurst and Brock. Hengistbury head has some very nice clean wind without many gusts but it's too uneven for my liking. The golf course there however is very nice and smooth but you get frowned on for using it in the day. Night kiting is... Interesting I just suggested Christchurch rec ground as it's a few minutes walk from me as I live near the bailey bridge pub! Not much room to fly but enough to demonstrate setup and the different operating windows of a 2 line and a 4 line of similar sizes. If you get her into kiting seriously a buggy board can be a good laugh but get her some insurance - for her and damage to 3rd parties! I've seen someone runover someone on a board, a dog being injured by a big kite swooping onto it and also someone smashing a car windscreen! Think insurance is Definitely drop me a PM if you want dude, if I'm free and can I'll happily spend an hour or so one evening showing you the ropes. When I actually have a life again, I will be popping down to this as well, sadly at this point I just don't! Tony, I have a 2.5m beemer which is spot on for my daughter, she still gets some air, but not enough to be unmanageable for her size, she is a complete stickpin, which you and your daughter are welcome to fly. I've not tried the 15m out in anger yet, waiting to pop down with Casey's in a slightly safer environment, the 10m is enough to kill me at the mo. Sounds sensible to me. I have a 3m 2-line on a bar and that's a bit lame, in strong winds you can fly it one handed. 4-lines allow a good bit of power. I've not tried the 15m out in anger yet, waiting to pop down with Casey's in a slightly safer environment, the 10m is enough to kill me at the mo.
