rick001
When i initially start the car for the first time, it catches straight away no problems - if i stop and get a bottle of milk, stopping the engine, and then try re-start the car, it takes a few seconds to catch and it seems as though at times as if it wont/is'nt going to catch !! Im wondering if its my plugs, choke sensor etc - Any ideas would be most welcome
cheekymonkey
Starter motor contacts, surely?
stevie_b
I agree, probably starter motor contacts. It's a fairly common issue, and you'll be pleased to know Toyota sell a kit to refurb them for about £15.
rick001
Thanks for the advice, sorry to be a bore but i did mean the "Engine failing to fire" for a few seconds not the starter motor catching is that still these contacts? stevie_b
Ah, that might be different. As you pointed out, if the starter motor's the problem it usually doesn't even crank over. As it's cranking OK but not firing, it might be something else.

dan294
Thread resurrection!!! Mine does this too, from cold and when hot its absolutley fine. I drive about 2 miles to take the little girl to school in a morning and on coming back to the car, temp gauge at about 70 ish, it takes a little longer to start, sounding like its trying to catch and fire then eventually does. Always been the same for 18 months plus, anyone elses the same? Mines a 97 Non VVTi TT.
charleshmlee
Change your engine coolant sensor(with 2 wire) near to the engine side of the upper water hose. I had the same problem like yours a month ago, and that was the fix. Cheers
