supra_aero
My car is overheating. Its an NA, and after looking on here I changed the radiator cap to a 1.3 bar aftermarket one. This seems to have made no difference. the stock water temp gauge goes off the scale now:( Is there any way I can easily ascertain its the water pump or a messed up radiator? The engine light came on just as I was parking up which is what seriously worried me . Any advice please? The water boils in the coolant expansion tank sometimes after switching off. Already searched but most of the cars had their problems solved with a radiator cap or they were turbo cars and could mean different issues. thanks in advance. tooquicktostop
I would not fit the 1.3bar cap, but thats another issue, it could be the thermostat that is not working, I have had this same issue, dont run the car anymore and get it changed then try again
spidermonkey
I would guess that there is a blockage somewhere, i would try draining the coolant and flushing the system to see
JustGav
Loose the 1.3bar rad cap unless you want to loose your heater matrix and all your coolant inside the car. Any steam inside the car yet or steamy smell?

Any steam inside the car yet or steamy smell? thanks for advice thus far. Yes funny you should say that there was about 2 weeks ago (I only drive it once a week). Called the AA out, they checked - said they found a minor oil leak but could now ascertain any further. Drove it home and steam disappeared and drove fine. Next time I started driving it the overheating started. What'd you reckon it'll be - hope its not too pricey
JustGav
Prepare for your heater matrix to go bang if it hasn't already I'd sugges tyou have a set of screwdrivers and two rubber bungs ready to block off the matrix pipes, if you intend to drive it anywhere. supra_aero
goodness me. I had no idea it was such a big job (or expensive). http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?t=98850&highlight=heater+matrix Wow Only do about 10 miles a week if that and had it a bit over 10 months. I'll try flushing the system first as heating seems ok so far, and no wet spots in footwell and replace old radiator cap. lets hope that works. supra_aero
right - realised there is no coolant in the expansion tank at all (on level ground with engine cold). nothing at all. Should it be between the low and high ?
supra_aero
worked this out with the search button it should be half full if anyone cares to note, so will top up with toyota coolant and see how it goes thereafter.
