Rob
According to news reports the government is going to introduce tax branding even for old cars. Dont think we will get away with it much longer Hopefully there would be some sort of public outcry, but probably not. The point of tax branding was to "clean up" new car production and steer the public to buying "cleaner" new cars which would filter dowm through the SH market over time. If the Govt. raise tax to those levels on older cars retrospectively, then I'd have to bin the supra. I suppose I could buy a knackered old mondeo with the money but when that breaks down? No money, no replacement car, I'd have to give up my job, lose the house and go on the social. That would be excellent work from the Govt, I'd have gone from being a contributor to a handout case, along with many others.

ivan
If they increase the tax on all older cars all they'll do is increase the amount of untaxed cars on the road.

It's a 2000 Supra but was registered in the UK mid March 2001 so I expect it'll go up as that's just after the key date.

keener
Was concerned about my '97 that was imported in '07. Called the dvla and they didn't ask me anything about emissions just said that the banding is done on the year of manufacture not when first registered in the UK so I pay £185. It seems odd that you're paying £400 for a year and someone else with the same car could pay £185 just 'cos nothings written down about the emissions. I'd contest that with the DVLA. mr lover
I'd contest that with the DVLA. But do not tell them about all of us
turbonut
FFS One DVLA office says its when the car was SVA'd before importing to the UK, and another says that the banding is done on the year of manufacture not when first registered in the UK Another case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing Its been a hypocritical tax all along. They are introducing it as a 'show room tax' i.e.; new cars originally, then they're making it retrospective to 2001 and after......and now?? pre 2001!!! then they're going to increase fuel tax by another 2p in the autumn to add further misery to an already crippled economy. I filled up on VPower today - 49 quid got me 40 litres Sometimes I hate this bl@@dy country sorry, I'll shut up now

SilverSoop
Was wondering when this thread rant was gonna come along! To the next one in 6 months time Yep beware the 31/12/08... According to news reports the government is going to introduce tax branding even for old cars. Dont think we will get away with it much longer Yeh Mr Darling and his cronies won the tax bid so you all will be paying what im paying atm and i'll be paying what the Irish are paying...£990.00 for a year?!?! I hope they dont either!! I'd punt the bit$h! Out of principle rather than cost - fair enough spending a few g modding your car but not if its just to drive the damn thing! Its only going to get worse by the sound of it... Here in Ireland, i'm paying €1250 for a years worth of tax. That works out at £990, so I think you have it lucky. Dont worry, i'll be there next year! Surely its done on year of manufacture not import, Id deffo contest it, where you would go I dunno, maybe DVLA? Also I didnt know a japanese SVA was legal over here? When she was SVA'd over in Japan, i was unlucky enough for my Supe to have it's emissions recorded, hence, thats why im paying what im paying. Cant change it! i have a 1998 and i paid only £185 for a year! £220 for 6 months??? grrrrrr Yeh thats good but i bet you that your emissions aren't recorded on the V5 though?? Thats mad. Can't you re-register the car or something? Haha...If only lol... http://www.plasticnipple.com/images/forums/wheelchair_owned.jpg Get lost... Mine's up for renewal at the end of the month; £185/12 months. It's a 2000 Supra but was registered in the UK mid March 2001 so I expect it'll go up as that's just after the key date. Unfortunetly, its likely but, we'll see the DVLA might change their bloody minds AGAIN!! i had my supra taxed about 7 months ago. its the 93 rz and i remember paying £220 for the entire year, even then i was pulling my hair out because it was too much. feel sorry for ya chap! You pay £220.00 do you for 6 months road tax mate?? My car was registered in 2002 but it doesn't make a difference as long as there is no CO2 log. Exactly... £220 for the year Never seen that, its been 180-185 for a while. Did you pay someone to tax if for you? Nope, taxed her myself matey...(reluctantly i might add) 6 months £220 , thats a lot........ alright Shane What did i tell you last time Gary?! Was concerned about my '97 that was imported in '07. Called the dvla and they didn't ask me anything about emissions just said that the banding is done on the year of manufacture not when first registered in the UK so I pay £185. What?! I got told the exact opposite1 What the hell is going on?! It seems odd that you're paying £400 for a year and someone else with the same car could pay £185 just 'cos nothings written down about the emissions. I'd contest that with the DVLA. Ive done that already matey, countless phone calls and letters. All that got me was a letter for a tax renewal date for £220.00 or £400.00! But do not tell them about all of us He already grassed us up during his last rant And the tide of sympathy ebbs away..... Oh thanks mate! den1
I don't know how this works, but the higher road tax bands apply to cars registered after 1st March 2001. Vehicle Excise Duty For cars registered after 1st March 2001, car/road tax, or Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), is charged according to a vehicle's carbon dioxide and fuel type. CO2 figures are submitted by the vehicle manufacturer and recorded on the vehicle logbook. A vehicle manufacturer will register the lower figure for their LPG cars. No changes after registration are permitted even if the car is subsequently converted to run on LPG. However, for those cars registered after 2001and converted to run on LPG, owners who submit the appropriate documentation (e.g. LPGA conversion certificate - click here for details) to the DVLA can request that the taxation class is changed to 'Alternative Fuel Car' and will then be eligible for a standard reduction on VED. Have a look at the DVLA website http://www.dvla.gov.uk/newved.htm for more information on how vehicles are banded according to their emissions, and the VED rates applied. http://www.boostlpg.co.uk/what_is/economic.htm If it is the case that the Supra has the higher tax..then the car should be able to be converted. There are kits that inject the LPG gas into the inlet manifold for £400. There are more sophisticated installations £1500-£200. I suppose this means that the supra could become a Duel Fuel car
