Number of people who quit smoking - tax impact

Hey All,

I have never smoked myself but apparently since the smoking ban over 400,000 have quit.

If we say that those 400,000 smoked on average a packet a day and lets say a packet is approx £5, thats £2m a day, now over 365 days thats £730m.

So how much is the taxman losing, according to various net articles tax is over 75% on cigarettes, thats approx £547,500,000 in tax.

The tax from tobacco in 2006/7 was £10bn

*waits for the government to justify this by raising the tax on petrol and alcohol*

Oh no wait - that's already happening.

I wish they would stop trying to change things around to make our quality of life better and focus on fixing the things that are already here (NHS).

The thing I don't get is I pay alot of tax being a smoker but I can get turned down for opperations for being a smoker. But if I was fat somthing I choose to be as well I have no problems getting opps. Both smoking and being fat are things we choose to do/be. Smokers pay for the NHS and it out weighs what smokers take back off the NHS. I read this in an article so not sure how true it is. Smokers should be treated the like kings in hospitals. (and yes I agree with the smoking ban in the work place) but smokers shouldn't be discriminated by the NHS.

(I am dyslexic and any comment about my spelling I will see as a personal attack at me and will be seen as bullying thank you :p)

Had a bad day at work and have to now wait till I finish to have a cig to carm down. :D

Think you're right mate. Sure I read it was a 3 to 1 ratio of tax which the NHS gets from smokers versus the expense of treating smoking related diseases. Smokers should be patched up and shipped out and told to get smoking!!

I said this ages ago, when they were talking about bringing in the ban. That tax must come from somewhere, so basically everyone is now paying through increased tax elsewhere :( Kids should be forced to start and get hooked at school.

Either that or we should round up all the scum sucking out of the country rather than paying in and burn them to providing heating for those who contribute to society - sensible policies for a better Britain :D
