Homer
The sump on the salvage NA engine has been pushed up about 1/4 inch, which seems to have occured some time in the cars previous life on the road. IIRC the oil strainer sits in the lower part of the sump, so I am concerned whether oil supply to it will be restricted. Judging by the photo, is it worth swapping the sump out while the engine is out of the car? It looks pretty minor so I'm not convinced it's worth while... simbasupra
ide leave it, seen plenty of sumps with scrape/dent damage.... seen plenty worse than that. however if your after peace of mind and it doesn't cost much then may be worthwhile. Chris Wilson
I'd take it off and beat it flat with some wood as a punch from the inside, and a hefty lump of wood as an anvil. This also allows you to wash it out inside and check the oil pick up strainer for debris.

Sounds like a plan to me, not major surgery and will get some form of peace of mind from doing it at little cost of a sump gasket/some sealant. This was my original thought - good chance to clear it all out before the engine goes in and it becomes inaccessible. My only concern is re-sealing the thing again. I've heard plenty of horror stories on here where sealant has been squeezed into the sump and caused the strainer to block. Now bearing in mind I'm a complete amateur (but with a little common sense!), is it wise to try this myself?
bondango
Darryl if you use the correct amount and bead size of sealant (3mm) and apply it according to the directions in the Engine manual you will be fine mate Edited July 5, 2008 by bondango (see edit history)
Homer
Darryl if you use the correct amount and bead size of sealant (3mm) and apply it according to the directions in the Engine manual you will be fine mate Thanks Marty The pic is clear and is a lot of help, I'll dig the service manual out too! The only thing that concerned me was that some garages appear to have screwed this job up, but I guess they weren't the sort of garages to follow the manual... Is there a specific sealant I should be using or can you recommend an off-the-shelf brand?
bondango
We only use Toyota FIPG (for engine oil - Black colour) though any good FIPG should do Darryl as long as its for engine oil not transmission (Orange colour)
