Traction Control - disabled with install of RLTC?

Guys,

A bit of help please. (Jspec Auto TT)

I have RLTC installed, and as far as I can see, the stock TC ECU is still plugged in (one under the spoiler ecu) but both TC bulbs in the fuel/temp gauge unit have been removed.

From research on here, I have to leave the Traction Control ECU plugged in, as it is used for the auto gear changes. Correct?

I really don't understand why the ECU would be left attached, but the bulbs removed?

I've noticed that if I corner with a bit of power, I am sure I can feel the TC kicking in. I think I've tried this with RLTC off, and I THINK i turned off the stock TC (I pressed the button once)....

Anyone got any advice? I was told that Matt Harwood installed the RLTC, so don't think anything silly would have been done...

I would install the bulbs, but I don't have any spare, nor the bulb holders. :(

Thanks

cant you use one of the other bulbs from the cluster just to test?

suprisingly a good point that not even crossed my mind! lol...

So, the stock tc ecu is in the passenger footwell? (I think that's where the main ECU is?) What's the easiest way to get to it, to see if it is still present?

thanks

Tis ok - found this:

http://www.mkiv.com/techarticles/racelogic_Install/index.html

EDIT: I'm still confused though.

I've read on here that the auto requires the stock TC to be left in place for gear changing.

Which bit of the TC? The ABS/TC ECU, or the one in the passenger footwell?

Still struggling to understand why, if the stock system has to remain, why the bulbs have been removed.

are you getting confused with the cream coloured ecu marked ABS that sits on top of the radio this is in fact the heater ecu, ABS refers to the type of plastic its made from, the auto gearbox traction control ecu is to the left of the main ecu in the passenger footwell, unplugging this will completely disable the trac buterfly which is situated ahead of the thottle plate in the throttle body, you have 2 options, leave everything in place and just get into the habit of switching the trac off every time you get in the car (you cannot just remove the switch) or remove the the trac ecu (passenger footwell) this may make gearchanges a little more bumpy or it may not, give it a try and see what you think, be warned that the trac buterfly will not operate on full throttle gear changes which could shorten the life of your autobox

thanks mate. I was refering to the silver ECU UNDER the spoiler ecu - not the brown or cream ones above the radio.

From my link above - people said it was the ABS/Trac ECU - as in Anti-lock brake system....? Is that wrong then?

Is there any reason why the bulbs would be removed from the TC indicators on the dash, after an RLTC install? The only one I can think of is because if TC is turned off all of the time, you wouldn't want a bright indicator constantly on the dash..?

I think what I need to do is to press the TC button on the dash, turn RLTC off, and go for a spirited drive and see if TC kicks in at all.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've spoken to Paul E (Dragonball) today, and he said that the stock TC is totally bypassed, so the button on the dash will do nothing.

When I can finally drive my car again (when the seats arrive) I'll be going out for a spin to confirm this I hope!
