Whats wrong with my Supra.

Hi Everyone.

 

I am totally at my wits end with the car i adored for many years,Its a m reg toyota supra twin turbo auto import bought about 6 years ago.

 

My problem started about 18 months ago when it failed its mot on rear Bridgestone tyres been basically slicks.

 

I told the garage to put some decent tyres on it and they put some dunlop i think at the time.

 

I noticed the steering and the whole feel of the car seemed really different when i drove it home,there was no sensation of grip or feedback through the sterring wheel and the car seemed to have a mind of its own.

 

Of to the garage i went the next day and they suggested putting new tyres to match on the front,so we tried this and at first i thought it felt better.

 

But within a few days the car was a joke and it felt like i was driving on balloons and felt like i was on a ice skating ring.

 

The steering felt lose and just not how it was,i could drive this car with my finger and it would not behave like it does now,even trying to keep it straight is a nightmare.

 

One minute i will be driving down a straight A road and the next i am feeling like it wants to pull me into the kerb.

 

After around 6 months of this i changed all the tyres yet again to toyo proxys that are suppose to be a softer compound,but still the car feels and drives like crap.

 

How can a car with worn out rear tyres and no grip handle like a dream and then behave like this.

 

I can only conclude its a tyre problem as nothing else has happened to my car.

 

The car has been to Chris wilson and he said the car seemed fine and drove better than most supra cars he has driven.

 

What i will say is i know my own car and there is something really not right here.

 

I have even taken it to another so called high performance car expert who claims the tracking was way out.

 

At first i thought he had nailed it as the car did feel different when driving it away from his garage,but within days/weeks the car is no different.

 

Please anybody with any knowledge regarding this matter please give me some advice as to what is wrong with this car.

 

I am so tempted to take it to Toyota ?

 

Just out of interest come someone post the Gio setting/tracking setting for this car so i can look into it.

 

 

The reason i ask this is when driving it feels like the front wheels want to go one way and the back wheels another.

 

I know there is a plus and minus issue here somewhere?

 

I live in Shropshire so if anyone has any idea or people i could rely on to sort out this problem i would be extremly gratefull to them.

 

Thanks for the listening to me rant on but i just want my car back.

 

All the suspension checks out fine before someone suggests it,this car has gone like this since changing tyres only.

 

Can a car feel so bad after changing from a bald rear tyres to really nice grippy ones.....Something aint right here?

Are the front tyres any wider than they were originally ?

Are the tyre pressures correct, and more importantly, the right pressure / equal pressure both sides ?

If CW didnt find a problem and / or the problems appear again after a period of time after a 'fix' maybe you have a slow puncture, or as youve replaced tyres a few times maybe a tyre that isnt sealing properly on the rim....corrosion or damaged rim maybe.

Is it an issue at constant speed or under acceleration ?

If you want to bring it back some time I'll have a drive in it. I seem to remember this car, and, at the time, I thought it drove perfectly. No charge for a quick look over and a quick check of the geo again, of course. Sounds damned odd to me.

 

That's an offer I'd take up if I were you time2die. CW has probably got more glowing references on here than any other Supra expert on the forum.

i had the same problem on a soarer tt

i fitted some dunlop on the front,and after it was crap,tramlining big time

it was mint before so i knew it was just the tyres,fitted some bridgestones after and all back to way it was before

 

if they tracked it up for the dunlops then you will have to get it redone again

Car was fine up untill i changed the tyres ...period...All the pressures are correct and have been changed many times.

 

The alloys are the original and all the tyres are the correct size,without looking this minute i think they are 235/45zr17 on the front and 255/40zr17 on the rear.

An almost bald tyre will have little tread squirm, a new one, especially a none performance road tyre, will have lots. Someone very sensitive to handling would pick that up and probably dislike the new tyres in the dry. I need hands on really, sadly my time is very limited at the moment as my old mother is, well, basically, dying, and i want to spend a bit more time here with her. As soon as this is resolved I will be able to look at it pretty much anytime, right now I have to see what I can fit in around caring for her :(

An almost bald tyre will have little tread squirm, a new one, especially a none performance road tyre, will have lots. Uni-Directional tyres ? On the right way round ? Clutching at straws here obviously....

 

like i said before,its the make of tyre,then the car being tracked up for that tyre

change tyres back to bridestone or avon then get it tracked back up then it will be like it was before

Had 36 psi all round and it makes no difference,infact i lowered them to 33 to try and get some feel of grip.

 

Something not right and i would love to find out what,I would not mind testing some bridgestown tyres out first before i bought them.

 

Anyone got any suggestions of places where you can check out some used tyres before you buy or something.

 

I mean at £500 for a set of tyres its a expensive try out and i have already changed them twice as it is.

On my old Supra, I had Dunlop SP Sports all round when I bought it. It always felt horrendously slack and seemed to slide all the time. Even taking a shallow arc to go around a mini roundabout (in the wet or dry) seemed to be a dangerous maneouvre.

 

I always thought that was just how Supras handled. Then, when the tyres needed replacing, I put Eagle F1s all around. The difference was just incredible. After that, the car just seemed to be glued to the ground.

 

Since then, I've never underestimated the difference in tyre manufacturer, and I'd never use anything other than Eagles from here on in.

yep know what your saying

i also found with the dunlop,it felt like i had a wheel bearing out:(

you could hear the road and felt harsh
